Full disclosure, Peter Chang Alexandria is a NOM Digital client, but you guys know I’m always going to give you my real take as usual.
Big news, Nomsters: Peter Chang just opened a brand-new spot in Alexandria, and if you know that name, you already know why I’m hyped. This is the latest location from one of the most celebrated Chinese chefs in the whole DMV, and the Alexandria outpost comes with two things that caught my eye right away.
It’s a NO TIPPING restaurant, and there’s an $18 lunch bento deal that’s honestly a steal! Think bold Sichuan and Hunan cooking, a huge vegan section, dim sum, and show-stopping mains like their famous Peking duck. It’s a Modern Chinese Bistro setup with an open kitchen, so you get to watch the magic happen. Whether you’re a longtime Peter Chang fan or you’ve never had his food, this new location’s absolutely worth knowing about.

What Makes Peter Chang Alexandria Stand Out?
The thing about Peter Chang is that the man’s a two-time James Beard Award finalist and one of the most respected Sichuan chefs in the country, so a new location is a genuine event. This Alexandria spot is the umpteenth restaurant in his DMV group, and it’s set up as a Modern Chinese Bistro with an open kitchen and easy QR-code ordering right at your table.
The cooking leans into bold Sichuan and Hunan flavors (plus a little Hubei, the chef’s home region), and that no-tipping policy is still pretty rare around here. Between the famous duck, the deep vegan section, and a lunch deal this good, it covers a LOT of bases for one menu.

What to Order at Peter Chang Alexandria
The menu runs deep, from small plates and dim sum to big chef-recommended mains, so here are my go-to picks plus the deal you shouldn’t miss.
Dry Fried Spicy Eggplant
This is one of my personal faves here, and a Peter Chang signature you’ll see fans rave about. It’s eggplant fried until the outside goes crisp and the inside turns silky, then tossed in a savory, lightly spicy sauce. If you think you don’t like eggplant, this one’s worth trying anyway.
Mapo Tofu
Another one of my must-orders. If you’re new to it, mapo tofu is a classic Sichuan dish: soft, custardy tofu simmered in a spicy, savory chili-bean sauce with that signature numbing peppercorn tingle. It’s comfort food with a kick, and it’s a classic example of the Sichuan cooking Peter Chang is known for.
Hunan Spicy Fish with Bean Sauce
For something bolder, the Hunan spicy fish with bean sauce is a go-to of mine: tender fish in a deeply savory, chili-spiked fermented bean sauce. Hunan cooking brings a different kind of heat than Sichuan, more straight-up spicy than numbing, so come ready for it.
A few more I’d steer you toward: the eggplant with spicy garlic sauce and the pan seared shrimp dumplings are both favorites, and if you’re going big, the chef-recommended mains like the famous Peking duck and the whole branzino are the move!
There’s also a large vegan section with 26 options, which is seriously impressive for a place doing this kind of cooking. And do not sleep on the $18 lunch bento: pick any 3 tapas or dim sum items and it comes with rice, available until 5PM daily (just note it excludes soup and the bubble pancake).
Who’s Peter Chang?
If the name’s new to you, Peter Chang’s kind of a legend around here. He trained in China and cooked for the Chinese Embassy in DC before building a cult following in Virginia, and he’s since grown into one of the DMV’s most decorated chefs. He’s got a whole family of spots across the area, including his upscale DC flagship Chang Chang, which even earned Michelin recognition. So when a new Peter Chang opens, it’s worth paying attention.
The Vibe and Experience
Peter Chang Alexandria sits inside the South Alex development right on Route 1, with a retail parking garage on site, so it’s an easy one to get to. Inside, it’s a sleek, bistro-style space where you order by QR code right at the table, and the no-tipping policy takes the math out of the end of your meal. It works for a group dinner, a vegan-friendly outing, or a date night, and if you want more real-deal Sichuan heat around DC afterward, Panda Gourmet in NE DC is another spot I’ve covered.

YES! If you love bold Chinese food, this one is a genuinely exciting new opening, and the no-tipping policy plus that $18 lunch bento make it easy to try without overthinking it. It’s great for groups, vegans, and anyone chasing real Sichuan and Hunan flavor.
