A Guide to The BEST Restaurants in Ellicott City: 20 Must Try Spots

October 21, 2026

Okay Nomsters, if there’s one town I get asked about more than almost any other, it’s Ellicott City. And honestly, I get it, because the food scene here is ridiculous in the best way. You’ve got Historic Main Street, that walkable, creekside stretch packed with cozy cafes and sit-down gems, and then you’ve got the Route 40 corridor along Baltimore National Pike, which has quietly become Howard County’s little Koreatown.

Between the two, I genuinely think Ellicott City punches way above its weight for a town this size. Korean comfort food, Sichuan, sushi, Peruvian charcoal chicken, scratch-made cafes, you can eat your way around the world here without ever leaving Howard County, and the prices stay reasonable while you do it.

So whether you’re planning a date night, a big family dinner, or a lazy weekend brunch, there’s something on this list for you. Let me put you on!

1. Pepper House

A dark bowl of dumplings topped with chili oil, red chili flakes, sesame seeds, and chopped scallions

Let’s start with a spot people genuinely argue is one of the best Chinese restaurants in Maryland. Pepper House is a small, no-frills hole in the wall tucked into an Ellicott City shopping center, and it’s all about bold, numbing Sichuan cooking that’s made in house.

My must-orders are the malatang (a personal-sized hot pot loaded with beef, luncheon meat, lotus root and more), the dan dan noodles, the crispy fish, and those Chengdu dumplings swimming in chili oil. The Singaporean-style stir-fried rice noodles (around $16, plus a dollar for a protein) are another one I always come back to, the flavors and the texture of the noodles are both on point.

Everything I’ve gotten here has been SO good, and the heat is the real deal, so come ready to sweat a little. It’s run by a sweet husband-and-wife duo, she works the front while he’s cooking in the back, and they even sell their housemade chili oil by the bottle (grab one, trust me). Bonus for the dim sum and dessert crowd, Siroo’s right next door, so you can save room for bingsu after!

2. Tea Horse

Tea Horse, Sichuan restaurant in Ellicott City

If you want your Sichuan in a gorgeous, spacious room, Tea Horse is the move. It comes from the same team behind Red Pepper in Towson, so the Chengdu pedigree’s legit, and the menu runs deep, from mapo tofu and dan dan noodles to whole fish with peppercorns.

My picks are the garlic-sauce eggplant (silky but still holding together, they nail the texture), the cumin lamb, and the mapo tofu. The half Peking duck wasn’t my absolute favorite ever, but it was tasty and the price is more than fair for a half bird.

Portions are super generous, and that big, beautiful dining room with its hand-painted mural makes this one of my go-tos for a group dinner or a date night in Ellicott City.

3. UMI

UMI Sushi, sushi restaurant in Historic Ellicott City

UMI is my favorite sushi spot in Ellicott City, hands down. It sits right on Historic Main Street, and the covered rear patio overlooking the creek is easily one of the nicer places to eat outside in all of Howard County. What sets UMI apart is the quality of the fish, they air-ship it in from California, Tokyo’s Tsukiji Market, Norway, and Spain, so every piece tastes super fresh.

The menu’s huge, from creative specialty rolls to big sushi boats and a chef’s-choice omakase, and you’ll want to look for rotating premium seafood like toro, uni, Hokkaido scallops, and seasonal Japanese fish when it’s available. The Ruby Toro roll is one of my favorite rolls ever, no exaggeration, built on buttery fatty tuna with a bright yuzu finish.

If you’re bringing someone newer to sushi, the Little Red Riding Hood roll (shrimp tempura and eel, layered up with spicy tuna and all the sauces) is an easy, crowd-pleasing one to start them on. Whether you’re grabbing a quick lunch or settling in for a full sushi dinner, UMI’s a must, Nomsters!

📍8167 Main St, Ellicott City, MD

4. Kim Bob Na Ra

Kim Bob Na Ra, Korean kimbap in Ellicott City

This one’s personal for me. Kim Bob Na Ra is a longtime local favorite on that Baltimore National Pike stretch, and its specialty is right there in the name: kimbap. Kimbap’s one of those foods I grew up on, so I’m a little biased, but this no-frills, order-at-the-counter spot does it right.

The beef kimbap’s my pick every single time, that balance of soft sesame rice, crunchy veggies, danmuji (the bright yellow pickled radish), egg, and savory beef all rolled up in seaweed. If you want to keep it lighter, the veggie kimbap combo is a solid call too.

Pair either one with an order of tteokbokki and you’ve basically nailed my ideal quick Korean lunch. The whole board leans budget-friendly, and it’s particularly great for takeout when you want something cozy and fast. If you’ve never tried kimbap and want a comforting intro, this is the spot to know in Ellicott City.

5. ChoSun Hwaro

ChoSun Hwaro, Korean BBQ in Ellicott City

If you’re building a shortlist of the best Korean BBQ in Maryland, ChoSun Hwaro is absolutely in the conversation, I’d put it in my top three in the entire state. The meat quality is outstanding, and the servers grill everything for you at the table, so nobody in your group’s stuck playing chef while the rest of you eat.

The kalbi (marinated short ribs) is the thing I’d send anyone here for, and their gyeran jjim (egg souffle) is the best I’ve had in the DMV! Don’t sleep on the rest of the menu either, the bossam and the jeon are both really solid, and the doenjang jjigae rounds out the table nicely.

There’s no all-you-can-eat here, it’s combos or a la carte, and the quality is exactly why that works, you already know a KBBQ meal here comes with a full spread of banchan too. The whole experience feels dialed in, from the meats to the comfort-food sides, and it’s the spot people on the Route 40 strip point you to for barbecue.

📍9445 Baltimore National Pike, Ellicott City, MD

6. Shin Chon Garden

Shin Chon Garden, turtle-grill Korean BBQ in Ellicott City

Shin Chon Garden’s the old-school Korean BBQ institution on this list, and my family’s been coming here for decades. They’re known for their KBBQ cooked right at your table on their famous turtle grill, but what I love most is that they just do everything well, from the homemade mandu to the mushroom jeongol.

It’s got that warm, old-school Korean restaurant feel, the kind of place that’s been quietly earning its reputation since way before Ellicott City became a Koreatown (Andrew Zimmern even named it one of the best Korean BBQ spots in the country). It’s a la carte, figure around $20 to $30 a person, and the quality of the meat does the talking. I especially love their jeongol in the wintertime, that bubbling hot pot is the ultimate cozy thing to share around the table when it’s cold out.

7. Siroo & Juk Story

Siroo and Juk Story, Korean comfort food in Ellicott City

Some of my favorite Korean food in the whole DMV comes from this low-key counter that plenty of people drive right past. Siroo & Juk Story is where I go when I’m craving Korean comfort food that tastes like home, and it does it all without breaking the bank.

It’s a casual, order-at-the-counter spot that’s basically a one-counter tour of Korean comfort food: a full porridge (juk) program, rice plates and stews, a Korean corn dog counter, and a shaved-ice station. The housemade rice cakes are outstanding, the perfectly chewy ddukbokki starts around $5.99, the kimchi jjigae is cozy and warming, and the Gold Snow Ice bingsoo is something I’d happily drive across Howard County for.

It’s the kind of place I can bring my whole (very picky) family and everybody walks out full and happy, which is not a small thing. Easily one of my top comfort-food picks in the area!

📍10176 Baltimore National Pike, Ellicott City, MD

8. The Mint Room

A platter of red tandoori chicken pieces garnished with cilantro, with salad in the background

When I can’t resist an Indian buffet (which is often, lol), The Mint Room is my go-to in Ellicott City. The lunch buffet runs around $19 a person, and the variety makes it worth every penny, think chili fish, lamb biryani, butter chicken, and a rotating spread that changes day to day, so there’s always something new to try.

There are lots of options if you’re vegetarian too, and the buffet comes with piping hot, fragrant chai that’s the perfect cold-weather bevvie. Beyond the food, the interior’s pretty and the service is warm and welcoming. I had a great experience here and I’d absolutely go back, it’s just an easy, satisfying midday move when you want to graze your way through a bunch of Indian classics in one sitting.

They do a la carte dinner too, but the lunch buffet’s the move when you want to sample widely without committing to a single plate. If you’ve been hunting for your Indian spot in EC, this buffet’s a safe bet.

📍9469 Baltimore National Pike, Ellicott City, MD

9. JAM Eateries

JAM Eateries, brunch spot in Ellicott City

Breakfast people, this one’s for you. JAM Eateries is one of the best brunch spots in all of Howard County, built around creative takes on breakfast classics. The best way to do JAM is to go with someone and share a spread, so you can try a little of everything.

The creative specialty pancakes are the headliner (their JAMmin’ Berry Pancakes are a must), but don’t skip the hearty savory plates, the corned beef hash is super hearty in the best way, the omelettes are solid, and I love their shrimp and grits too.

They do a great drinks program with homemade Bloody Marys and seasonal mimosa flights, so it’s a fun spot for groups. Fair warning though, it gets busy, so plan ahead if you’re going on a weekend. If a proper sit-down brunch is the goal, JAM needs to be on your radar!

📍6010 University Blvd, Ellicott City, MD

10. Cafe EZ

Cafe EZ, breakfast and crepes near Ellicott City

Cafe EZ started right here in Ellicott City, and it’s a casual breakfast-and-lunch cafe that’s earned a permanent slot in my brunch rotation. They’re famous for their sweet and savory crepes, but the breakfast plates, rice bowls, and sandwiches hold their own too.

If you make it to the roomier second location (Cafe EZ 2, just over in Elkridge), do yourself a favor and get the Cinnamon Roll French Toast, it’s a straight-up 10/10 and that’s not something I hand out lightly. If you’re going savory, the Havana Crepe (chicken, chorizo, cheese and egg, smothered in sour cream, avocado, salsa and chipotle) is as hearty as it sounds.

It’s also a women-owned spot, which I always love to see, and the prices stay easy on the wallet. The menu’s wide enough that you’re never stuck choosing between a cozy egg plate and something a little more fun, which is exactly why it keeps earning a spot in my regular rotation. Great for a group, too.

📍3290 N Ridge Rd, Ellicott City, MD

11. Georgia Grace Cafe

Georgia Grace Cafe, scratch-made brunch in Historic Ellicott City

Georgia Grace is a charming little cafe right on Historic Main Street, and it’s a personal favorite of mine. They make pretty much EVERYTHING from scratch, the salad dressings, the pita, even the gluten-free cheesecake, and that made-from-scratch ethos runs deep (the owner, Paula, grew up in a Greek family where nothing was processed).

They’re best known for their crepes, both sweet and savory, but the menu wanders happily into Greek territory with dishes like souvlaki and house pita, plus seriously fantastic baked goods. That warm blueberry coffee cake was the highlight of my last visit, and the gluten-free crepes mean nobody in your group gets left out.

It’s cozy, the food’s fresh and delish, and you can pair it with a slow wander through the Main Street shops afterward. If you want a scratch-made breakfast or lunch in Ellicott City, this gem’s the move, Nomsters.

📍8333 Main St, Ellicott City, MD

12. Old Mill Cafe

Old Mill Cafe, coffee and baked goods in Historic Ellicott City

Old Mill Cafe might be my new favorite cafe in Howard County. It’s a cozy coffee shop, bakery, and gift shop in Historic Ellicott City near the landmark railroad bridge, and they’re actually particular about their craft coffee, brewing with sustainably sourced, locally roasted Orinoco beans.

The baked goods are the real star though, that banana chocolate chip coffee cake stopped me in my tracks (I liked it so much I ate half and froze the rest for my mom). Beyond pastries, they’ve got homemade crepes, sandwiches, quiche, and soups. It’s a woman-owned spot with shelves full of work from local artists and authors, free Wi-Fi, customer parking, and a dog-friendly enclosed patio that feels like a little oasis tucked into downtown EC.

📍4 Frederick Rd, Ellicott City, MD

13. Manor Hill Tavern

Manor Hill Tavern’s a great stop for upscale pub grub in Ellicott City, think brick-oven pizza, burgers, and a solid craft beer list in a comfortable, come-as-you-are room. The move here is Mondays, when pizzas are half-off, which makes the Margherita just $7.

It’s not my personal number-one pizza in the area, but it’s solid and absolutely worth it at that price. The real surprise stars, though, were the apps and the burger: the crispy green beans come drizzled with soy honey and a smoked tomato ranch I could basically drink, and the smashburger gives better Big Mac energy in the best way.

My pro tip is to split a pie for the table, start with those green beans, and share the smashburger if there’s two of you. Easy, satisfying, and a genuine steal on a Monday night.

📍3733 Old Columbia Pike, Ellicott City, MD

14. Asian Court

Gloved server lifting a bamboo steamer of pork buns from a steaming dim sum cart at Asian Court in Owings Mills

Asian Court is my go-to in Ellicott City for dim sum. They specialize in Cantonese cooking and classic Hong Kong-style dim sum, and on weekends they roll out cart service, which is always such a fun way to do it. This is an excellent spot to come with a group so you can order a bunch of different plates and share them family-style across the table.

There’s a lot to work through on the dim sum menu, so bring your crew and order wide. If dim sum’s what you’re craving in Ellicott City, Asian Court needs to be on your list, it’s the one I keep coming back to for that weekend cart experience. Go hungry, go with people, and let the carts come to you.

I reviewed their Owings Mills location, so it won’t be exactly the same as this one, but it’ll give you a good feel for what Asian Court does.

📍11105 Resort Road, Ellicott City, MD

15. The White Oak Tavern

The White Oak Tavern, award-winning burger in Ellicott City

If you’re in the mood for a burger, The White Oak Tavern needs to be on your list, I think it might have the best one in HoCo. The award-winning White Oak Burger (it took Best Burger at Howard Magazine’s 2023 awards) is an 8oz brisket-and-chuck blend that’s ridiculously juicy, topped with porter-glazed caramelized onions, special sauce, arugula, and aged white cheddar on a brioche bun.

Beyond the burger, it’s a proper gastropub: scratch-made American comfort food built on seasonal, local ingredients, 38-plus rotating craft beers on tap, daily brunch, and a dog-friendly patio. They’ve even got dedicated gluten-free fryers, which is a big deal if you’ve got dietary restrictions.

Don’t skip the roasted Brussels sprouts to start either, they come with roasted apples, candied pecans, and a balsamic reduction for that sweet-savory thing. Everything we ordered across the fall menu was so good, but that burger’s the thing you came for, so make it this!

📍10030 Baltimore National Pike D240, Ellicott City, MD

16. Leelynn’s Dining Room & Lounge

Leelynn’s Dining Room & Lounge is a longstanding neighborhood restaurant in Ellicott City with a broad American menu and a real Maryland influence running through it. The crab cakes and burgers are what it’s best known for, and that lump blue crab dip with Old Bay is the kind of thing I’d steer you toward right off the bat.

It’s the sort of dependable, been-around-forever place that locals quietly keep in their back pocket for an easy sit-down dinner with the family. The menu’s broad enough that everyone at the table finds something, but the Maryland seafood side is where I’d lean. If you’re after classic American comfort food with a real hometown feel, Leelynn’s is well worth a try.

📍9495 Old Annapolis Rd, Ellicott City, MD

17. Hang Ari

Hang Ari, Korean soft tofu soup in Ellicott City

Hang Ari is my absolute go-to for soondubu (Korean soft tofu soup) in Maryland. Real talk, when BCD Tofu House closed I was devastated, and then I found Hang Ari and their tofu soup is just as good, maybe even better depending on the day. It’s a cozy, family-run spot on Baltimore National Pike, and they’ve refined their recipes to use no artificial seasonings.

There are nine different soondubu options, so there’s something for everyone, but my personal favorite is the mushroom, with that earthy, deeply savory broth, and the beef’s a close second. Heads up, their spicy is actually SPICY, like genuinely intense, so order accordingly! They’re known for their kalguksu (knife-cut noodle soup) too, but the soondubu’s the star of the show and what most people make the trip for.

📍9380 Baltimore National Pike #105, Ellicott City, MD

18. Pipilinka

Pipilinka, Peruvian charcoal chicken in Ellicott City

If you love Peruvian charcoal chicken, Pipilinka is a must. This family-owned mom-and-pop shop roasts their chicken over natural charcoal in an oven they actually imported from Peru, which gives that pollo a la brasa its smoky, crispy-skinned, juicy-inside magic, and the chicken’s halal too.

The Charcoal Chicken Set (around $33 to $36) gets you a whole bird with three big sides and four housemade sauces, which makes it a really good value for a family. The two spicy aji sauces, the yellow and the green, are what take it over the top, I wanted to buy both in bulk. Don’t skip the chaufa (Peruvian fried rice) either, it’s easily the best I’ve had in a minute. It’s exactly the kind of under-the-radar gem I love to shout out, Nomsters!

📍4725 Dorsey Hall Dr, Ellicott City, MD

19. Dirty Gangster Dogs

Dirty Gangster Dogs is Ellicott City’s spot for wildly loaded gourmet hot dogs. We’re talking over-the-top combinations of toppings piled high, the kind of indulgent, messy-in-the-best-way dogs you don’t find just anywhere. It’s mainly a takeout spot, so this is one to grab and go rather than settle in for, but if you’re a hot dog fan who likes things maxed out, it’s a fun, craveable detour.

Sometimes you just want a ridiculous loaded dog with everything on it, and this is where you get exactly that in EC. Round up a friend, order a couple of the wildest combos on the board, and split them so you get to try more than one. It’s a fun one to work into an Ellicott City food crawl when you want something totally different.

📍9095 Frederick Rd Ste A, Ellicott City, MD

20. Cafe June

Cafe June, cozy cafe and croffle in Ellicott City

Rounding things out, Cafe June’s the cozy coffee shop you want for a killer croffle. It’s a cute, laptop-friendly cafe with a vibe I love, exactly the kind of place you post up to get work done or catch up with a friend. The menu’s deep, espresso drinks and specialty lattes (the pistachio latte gets a lot of love), matcha frappes, smoothies, acai bowls, breakfast sandwiches, and lunch wraps, so whether you want a treat or an actual meal, they’ve got you.

But the croffle (a croissant-waffle hybrid) is the obvious must-order. It comes out big enough to share, and you top it with a scoop of ice cream, my mom and I went matcha. At around $8, it’s a sweet-tooth win and the perfect little dessert to close out an Ellicott City afternoon!

📍10039 Baltimore National Pike Ste E, Ellicott City, MD

So there you have it, my running list of the best restaurants in Ellicott City. Between the Route 40 Korean spots, the Historic Main Street cafes, and all the gems in between, I really do think this town is one of the most underrated food destinations in Maryland.

Whether you’re planning a whole day on Main Street or just picking one spot for dinner, you really cannot go wrong here. Have you guys been to any of these yet? And more importantly, what am I missing, because you know I’m always hunting for the next spot to put you on. Let me know your Ellicott City favorites in the comments, Nomsters, and if this list helped you out, save it and send it to your HoCo foodie friends. Happy eating!
