Okay, I think I found my new favorite cafe in Howard County, Nomsters! I’d driven past Old Mill Cafe in Historic Ellicott City tens of times and somehow never made it in, which in hindsight was a rookie mistake. I finally went for lunch, and the thing that sealed it? They’re dog friendly, so my girl Daisy got to tag along and smell all the things while I ate.
We parked ourselves on their patio, which honestly feels like a little oasis tucked into downtown EC. The short version: the craft coffee’s their whole personality, the baked goods are the real star (that banana chocolate chip coffee cake, my goodness), and the vibe’s so cozy and welcoming I already know I’ll be back. Let me walk you through it.

What Makes Old Mill Cafe a Standout Cafe in Ellicott City
Plenty of spots pour coffee, but Old Mill’s actually particular about theirs, and that’s the draw. They specialize in craft coffee and brew with sustainably sourced, locally roasted Orinoco beans, so this isn’t a place that treats coffee as an afterthought. Beyond the cup, it’s just a genuinely lovely little room.
There’s a handful of tables inside, shelves lined with work from local artists and authors, and the kind of warm, worn-in feeling that tells you it’s a neighborhood favorite. Add the dog-friendly patio and the fact that it’s a woman-owned small business, and you’ve got a cafe that feels like it actually belongs to Ellicott City instead of one that could be anywhere.
What to Order at Old Mill Cafe
I kept it pretty simple on this visit, but here’s what I got and what I’m already plotting to come back for.
Banana Chocolate Chip Coffee Cake
This was the surprise standout of the whole lunch. I wasn’t expecting a coffee cake to stop me in my tracks, but it was so yum, and I regretted not getting more while I was there. Actual confession: I liked it so much I ate half and froze the rest so I could share it with my mom when she visits. If you get one thing here, make it this!

Turkey and Cheddar Sandwich
The sandwich was solid, a good, honest turkey and cheddar that hit the spot for lunch. I’ll be real though, it was standard rather than a showstopper, and next to that coffee cake it just couldn’t compete. Perfectly nice if you want something savory, but the baked goods are where this kitchen shines, so plan your order around those.
Cookie Butter Pop Tart
Here’s my one regret: I completely missed the case of baked goods to my left, and only after ordering did I spot a scratch-made cookie butter pop tart just sitting there taunting me. They make their pop tarts in house, so this one’s shooting straight to the top of my next-visit list. Learn from my mistake and scan the whole pastry case before you order, Nomsters.
The Craft Coffee
I’d already had two cups at home before I came (rookie pacing, I know), so I skipped a bevvy this round, which means I can’t give you my verdict yet. But the coffee’s genuinely their thing, those Orinoco beans are their pride and joy, and it’s the first thing I’m ordering next time. If you’re a coffee person, this is your move.
What Coffee Does Old Mill Cafe Use?
Since the coffee’s the whole point here, it’s worth knowing what’s in the cup. Old Mill brews with Orinoco Coffee and Tea, a roaster based right up the road in Jessup, Maryland, so it’s about as local as it gets. Their beans are Fair Trade and organic certified, and Orinoco roasts in small, on-demand batches. Basically, if you care about sustainably sourced coffee that isn’t shipped in from who-knows-where, this checks the box.
An Oasis Patio For You and Your Floof
The reason I finally went was the dog-friendly thing, and it did not disappoint. Daisy has a super strict diet so she wasn’t eating, but she loves coming along and taking in a new spot, and their patio was the perfect place for it. It genuinely feels like an oasis, a calm little pocket away from the bustle, and being able to bring your pup and just linger over lunch is such a gift. If you’ve got a good-natured dog, this is a lovely spot to bring them.
The Vibe and Experience
Inside, it’s cozy and welcoming in that way that makes you want to stay a while, work through a coffee, and browse the local-artist shelves. It’s clearly a beloved neighborhood haunt, the kind of local favorite that feels lived-in and loved. There’s a small lot with parking spaces for guests, which is a genuine win in Historic Ellicott City. However you spend it, it’s a great reason to slow down for a day out in Old Ellicott City.

Is Old Mill Cafe Worth A Visit?
Yes, and I’m a little annoyed at myself for taking this long. Between the local-roasted coffee, those made-from-scratch baked goods, the dog-friendly oasis of a patio, and the warm neighborhood feel, it’s exactly the kind of cozy spot I want in my rotation. It’s my new favorite cafe in HoCo, and I’ll be back the second I want a good coffee cake and a slow morning. For more coffee in the area, Cube Coffee and Cafe June are two other EC spots worth a stop.
Have you guys been to Old Mill Cafe yet? And more importantly, what am I ordering next time, the pop tart or the coffee cake (or, let’s be real, both)? LMK in the comments, Nomsters, and if you’ve got a dog-loving friend who needs a new patio spot, send this their way.
