Puerto 511: A Hidden Gem for Peruvian Food in Baltimore

October 24, 2026

Okay Nomsters, I am genuinely blown away by Puerto 511. This little Peruvian spot in Baltimore’s Mount Vernon had been on my list for ages, and I finally made it happen with a food group I went with. We went on a Tuesday, which meant we got their five-course tasting menu for $59 a person, and let me tell you, the value here is unreal.

For anyone wondering if it’s worth it, YES, and it might be one of the best deals in the city for what you get. Every single course was packed with flavor, from a ceviche that made me sit up straight to a hearty aji amarillo pasta I somehow finished even while stuffed. It’s also BYOB, which keeps it affordable. If you love a tasting menu that overdelivers, this Peruvian gem’s a must! Here’s everything we ate.

What Makes Puerto 511 A MUST…

Puerto 511 bills itself as Baltimore’s first micro Peruvian restaurant, and it’s been quietly turning out some of the city’s best food for about a decade, landing on Baltimore Magazine’s best restaurants lists along the way. Chef and owner Jose Victorio Alarcon grew up in Callao, Peru, and you can taste that in the way the menu leans on real Peruvian flavors instead of watering them down.

It’s a prix-fixe concept, so you’re getting a curated, multi-course experience rather than a huge a la carte menu, and the kitchen changes things up seasonally. The room’s small and intimate, which makes the whole thing feel special without feeling fussy. For a tasting menu this thoughtful at this price, it’s honestly hard to beat.

What to Order at Puerto 511

Since it’s a set tasting menu, you don’t really order so much as get walked through the meal, but here’s what our five courses looked like and the ones that stood out most. The menu’s seasonal, so yours may differ.

The Ceviche

This was the standout for me, an exquisite start where each bite was packed with flavor. It came in a rocoto tiger’s milk with red onion, lime, sweet potato, cancha, and cilantro, served alongside a yellow potato topped with crab meat. An exquisite start, and every bite really was packed with flavor. If this is any indication of the kitchen, you’re in for a good night.

Antichucho (Grilled Veal Heart Skewers)

This was my first time trying veal heart, and I was pleasantly surprised. It was way more tender than I expected, and like everything else, it was seasoned to perfection. If you’re a little nervous about it, don’t be, this is the dish to be adventurous with.

The Aji Amarillo Pasta

Our main was a pasta made with aji amarillo, cheese, sauteed ribeye, onions, tomato, and mushroom, and it was hearty and comforting in the best way. I was already full by this point and still finished the entire plate, lol, which tells you everything. The other courses were a yum tamale topped with ahi tuna, passion fruit glaze, pineapple, jalapeno, and chalaquita, and we closed with a lucuma ice cream with chocolate mousse and strawberries, just a few perfect bites to end on.

What Is Antichucho?

If “grilled veal heart skewers” made you do a double take, here’s the deal. Antichucho (also spelled anticucho) is a classic Peruvian street food, skewers of marinated, grilled meat that traditionally use beef heart, cooked over an open flame until charred and tender.

It’s a beloved staple all over Peru, and it’s exactly the kind of dish that shows a Peruvian kitchen isn’t holding back. At Puerto 511 it’s seasoned to perfection, and as a first-timer I was pleasantly surprised, so it’s worth being a little brave when it lands on your table.

The Vibe and Experience

Puerto 511’s an intimate, small spot, so it feels personal and a little special, perfect for a date night or a memorable dinner with friends. It’s BYOB, which is part of what makes the value so unbeatable, just bring your own wine or beer for a small corkage, or bring Pisco and they’ll whip up a Pisco sour for you in house.

Reservations are a smart idea given how small it is. It sits right in Mount Vernon, so you can easily make a whole evening of it, maybe pairing dinner with a wander through the nearby Walters Art Museum earlier in the day. For another special-occasion dinner in the city, Charleston is worth knowing about if you want to go all out.
