District Candle Lab: Make Your Own Candle Class in DC

October 20, 2026

Okay Nomsters, if you’re hunting for a fun, hands-on thing to do in DC, bookmark this one. I spent an afternoon at District Candle Lab in the Union Market District and had an absolute blast making my own candle from scratch, then a charm necklace at their Fawne charm bar right next to it.

Short answer, yes, you need to do this, especially for a date, a girls’ day, or a little treat-yourself solo afternoon. It’s part science experiment, part therapy, part craft: you pick your own scents off a wall of 60-plus fragrances, pour your own soy candle, and walk out with something you actually made. District Candle Lab kindly hosted my visit, but all opinions here are 100% my own, you already know I keep it real. Let me put you on to everything you need to know before you go!

What Makes District Candle Lab A Must…

So what makes this place special? District Candle Lab opened in the Union Market District back in 2024, and it’s a woman-owned spot founded by Ferzan Jaeger, a former NASA physicist, which is honestly the coolest origin story for a candle studio.

The concept’s simple but so well done: a hands-on candle-making class built around a scent wall of more than 60 fragrances, where you blend your own combination and pour a soy candle to take home. Right alongside it is Fawne, their walk-in charm bar, so you can make custom jewelry too. There are even coffee beans to reset your nose between scents, and it’s a fun afternoon whether you’re on a date, out with your friends, or treating yourself solo.

What to Make at District Candle Lab

Here’s exactly how it works and what I’d budget for, because there’s more going on here than just candles.

The Candle-Making Class ($48 to $55)

This is the main event. You start at the scent wall, which has 60-plus fragrances, and mix and match however you please until you land on a combo you love. I went with green tea, lavender, and orange blossom, and I LOVED how it turned out!

The small jars run around $48 and the larger ones around $55, and that price includes both the candle and the experience, which takes about 30 to 45 minutes of hands-on time. One thing to plan for: the candle needs roughly 2 hours to set before you can take it home, so wander Union Market and grab dessert from one of the best spots in DC while you wait, or go the no-wait route below.

Make a Diffuser Instead

If you don’t want to wait around for your candle to set, you can make a reed diffuser instead, which is ready to take home right away. Same build-your-own-scent fun, zero wait, so it’s a great call if you’re short on time or just a little impatient (no judgment here, lol).

The Fawne Charm Bar

I also made a stop at the Fawne charm bar, which is right there in the studio with no reservation needed. You grab a tray, pick your chain, and go wild choosing charms, and I walked away with a necklace (they also do bracelet and purse chains). You can add as many charms as you want, so it’s easy to keep it simple or build something really special, and just as easy to lose track of time doing it.

If you’ve never heard of a charm bar, here’s the deal: it’s a DIY jewelry station where you build your own piece from scratch. You choose a base chain (necklace, bracelet, or purse chain), then pick from trays of little charms, pendants, and beads to make it yours, and someone helps you attach everything so it’s secure. At Fawne, it’s walk-in with no appointment, so it’s the perfect thing to do after your candle’s poured and setting. Think of it as grown-up arts and crafts, except you actually get to wear the result.

The Vibe and Experience

I had an absolute blast here, and it’s the kind of spot where an afternoon just flies by. You don’t need any experience to jump in either, since it’s a guided, build-your-own class from start to finish. It works for just about any occasion: a date (it’s a great one, since you’re making something together), a girls’ day, a bachelorette, or a solo reset. Just note that the candle class caps at 12 people per session, so it stays intimate rather than chaotic.

Is District Candle Lab Worth Scheduling?

YES! District Candle Lab’s one of the more fun, hands-on things I’ve done in DC in a while, and I’d absolutely go back. It’s perfect for a date, a celebration, or a creative afternoon with your people, and you leave with something you made with your own two hands. If you want to turn it into a whole outing, book your candle class, then grab yum eats + drinks at Olivia Macaron while it sets. Highly recommend, Nomsters!

Have you guys been to District Candle Lab yet, or is it going on your DC list now? Let me know what scents you’d blend together in the comments, and if you’ve got a friend who loves a cute DIY afternoon, send this their way. Happy making, Nomsters!
