Fraiche DC: Cajun-Caribbean Dining in Columbia Heights

September 19, 2026

Some restaurants just have IT, you know? Fraiche is one of those. I finally got to experience the magic on 14th Street, and you guys, the food and the whole vibe did not disappoint. Quick note for transparency, chef Matt Price (a lot of you know him as Mr. Make It Happen) hosted us, but I’d be hyping this place up regardless because the plates genuinely delivered.

Think tender oxtail meatballs, a She Crab Soup I’m still thinking about, and short rib so tender it basically fell apart. Fraiche is Matt’s Cajun, Caribbean, and Southern spot in Columbia Heights, and it’s dialed in for a proper date night or a celebration. If you’ve been sleeping on it, consider this your sign, because this was easily one of my favorite DC dinners in a while!

Why Fraiche Is a Standout for Cajun and Caribbean Flavors in DC

Fraiche opened in early 2025 from chef Matt Price, and it’s quickly become one of those 14th Street spots people plan a whole night around. What sets it apart is the cooking itself, a Cajun, Caribbean, and Southern American mashup with real French technique behind it, so the flavors go bold but the plating stays refined.

It’s upscale without being stuffy, which is my favorite kind of nice dinner. The space used to be a theater, and the room (warm gold walls, deep burgundy booths, moody copper lighting) absolutely delivers on atmosphere. Add craft cocktails and a Sunday brunch, and you’ve got a spot that works for date night, a birthday, or honestly any excuse to eat really well.

What to Order at Fraiche

Here’s exactly what we ordered and how I’d rank your must-tries.

Oxtail Meatballs ($17)

Start here. These are braised and fried oxtail meatballs sitting in a rich brown stew reduction with parmesan, and they’re honestly one of the yummiest oxtail dishes I’ve had. Tender, deeply savory, and exactly the kind of opener that sets the tone for the whole meal. Non-negotiable in my book!

Braised short rib piled on twirled spaghetti in a savory chili-flecked broth, grilled lamb chops behind

She Crab Soup ($18)

It was hot out and we ordered a bowl of chef Matt’s She Crab Soup anyway, zero regrets. It’s rich, creamy, and loaded with generous lumps of crab, so comforting and yum. If you love a good crab soup, don’t skip this one.

Golden Gate Noodles with Short Rib ($16, plus $24 for short rib)

You can pick from a few proteins here, but do yourself a favor and add the short rib. It was phenomenal, fall-apart tender and just melty. It’s an add-on on top of the $16 noodles, so it’s a splurge, but it’s the dish I’d come back for first.

Three golden fried rice balls in red tomato sauce, topped with grated parmesan and chives

Butter-Kissed Lamb Chops ($56)

The priciest thing we got at $56, and it earns it, four big chops with garlic-herb mash and asparagus, beautifully cooked and seasoned just right. This is your special-occasion order, the one you get when you’re celebrating something.

Butterscotch Bread Pudding ($13)

Save room, because dessert’s not an afterthought here. The butterscotch bread pudding was heavenly, and the perfect sweet ending. We also grabbed the Sticky Ribs ($16) earlier and they were a solid add if you want one more savory bite before dessert.

What Kind of Food Does Fraiche Serve?

Fair question, because you’ll see it labeled a few different ways online. Straight from the source, Fraiche is a Cajun, Caribbean, and Southern American fusion run through French technique, so the menu swings from that She Crab Soup to Cajun-spiced plates and Southern comfort classics.

Some listings call it French, which isn’t quite right, the French part’s the method, not the menu. Beyond what we ordered, the kitchen also does things like a mambo-sauced fried snapper, a jambalaya risotto, and a gumbo, so there’s plenty of range for a repeat visit (and there will be one). If you’re into DC’s Southern-leaning comfort food, it’s right at home next to a spot like Honeymoon Chicken over in Petworth.

The Vibe and Experience

This is where Fraiche really shines. The room feels intimate and a little glam, exactly what you want for a night out, and the service was on point from start to finish. It’s date-night central, but it’d be just as good for a birthday dinner or a group celebration. One tip, book ahead on OpenTable, especially for weekends. And if you want to keep the night going, grab a nightcap nearby at Allegory, one of my favorite DC cocktail bars.

Is Fraiche Worth A Visit?

This is a special-occasion spot that actually lives up to the hype. The oxtail meatballs and that short rib alone would bring me back, the room’s gorgeous, and the service made the whole night feel easy. It’s not an everyday budget, especially once you factor in the 20% service charge, but for a date night or a celebration in DC, it’s such a strong pick! It’s earned a real spot on my upscale DC list, right up there with somewhere like Marcus for a special night out, Nomsters.

Have you guys made it to Fraiche yet, or is it on your DC list now? Tell me what you’d order in the comments, and if you’re planning a date night, save this one and go hungry.
