Some of the best bites in Baltimore aren’t fancy, they’re the neighborhood spots that’ve been quietly nailing it for decades, and Woodlea Bakery’s exactly that. A bunch of you kept telling me to go, and after making the trip out to Belair Road, I’m so glad I listened, because their treats were fire!
This family run bakery’s been around since 1943, that’s over 80 years of freshly baked donuts, cakes, pies, and pastries, and you can taste that experience in every bite. I loaded up on a half dozen donuts and a slice of their famous strawberry shortcake, and let me put you on, the powdered marshmallow donut and the strawberry shortcake are the moves. The best part? Those donuts are just $1.50 each, so it’s a total steal. If you’re a fan of old-school bakeries, this Gardenville gem needs a spot on your list.

Why Woodlea Bakery Belongs on Your Baltimore Food List…
So what makes Woodlea so special? Longevity, for one. It opened back in 1943 and it’s still family run four generations later, which is honestly kind of remarkable in the bakery world. They’re a true from-scratch operation known for freshly baked donuts, cakes, pies, cream puffs, and all kinds of pastries, and it’s stayed a neighborhood favorite for decades.
This’s the kind of place where the case is stocked with the classics done right, no trend chasing, just consistently good baked goods at prices that feel like a throwback too. In a city with no shortage of sweets, Woodlea earns its spot by simply delivering consistently good baked goods at prices that feel like a throwback. If you’re mapping out a donut run, it’s a worthy stop alongside my other favorites in my best donuts in Maryland guide.

What to Order at Woodlea Bakery
The case is full of tempting stuff, but here’s what I grabbed and what I’d tell you to reach for.
Powdered Marshmallow Donut ($1.50)
This was next level, one of the two standouts in the whole box. It’s a pillowy donut loaded with marshmallow and dusted in powdered sugar, and it’s exactly as dreamy as it sounds. Regulars rave about the marshmallow treats here, and now I totally get it. Do not leave without one!
Apple Filled Donut ($1.50)
Another standout for me. It’s got a generous amount of apple filling tucked inside a soft, fresh donut, so you get that cozy apple pie feeling in every bite. For a buck fifty, the quality seriously delivered. I’d order this one again in a heartbeat.
Strawberry Shortcake ($3.95)
They told me they’re famous for their strawberry shortcake, so obviously I had to. The slice was huge, fluffy cake layered with pillowy whipped cream and juicy strawberries, perfect for summer. At $3.95 for that size, it’s a ridiculous deal! Highly recommend grabbing one, the size alone makes it worth it.

The Rest of the Case
I also worked my way through a chocolate glazed marshmallow donut, an apple fritter, and a cinnamon twist, and they were all really good, no duds in the box. Beyond what I tried, Woodlea’s known for sweet buns, jelly turnovers, cream puffs, apple dumplings, and full cakes and pies, and they handle custom and wedding cakes too.
Basically, whatever old-school bakery craving you’ve got, they’ve probably got it covered. If you’re hunting more nearby donuts, Geresbeck’s over in Middle River does a giant donut worth knowing about too.
How Long Has Woodlea Bakery Been Around?
Woodlea opened in 1943 and has stayed in the same family ever since, now run by the founder’s grandson and his wife, which makes it one of Baltimore’s true legacy bakeries. That kind of history’s rare, and it’s a big part of the charm. When a spot’s been perfecting the same donuts and cakes for more than 80 years, you’re not just buying a treat, you’re getting a little piece of Baltimore that generations of families have grown up on.
The Vibe and Experience
Set your expectations right, because Woodlea’s a classic takeout bakery, not a sit-down cafe. You walk up to the counter, order from the case, and take your goodies to go, which is exactly how a neighborhood bakery should be. It’s a true neighborhood staple, so it makes for a lovely quick stop.
Quick heads up, it’s a good idea to bring cash, since paying by card comes with a minimum. There’s metered parking right on Belair Road plus some spots on the side streets around the corner. It’s unpretentious and friendly, the kind of place that’s clearly a neighborhood staple.
