Tia’s Italian Ice: Philly-Style Water Ice in Baltimore

July 24, 2026

I don’t refeature a spot unless it truly earns it, and Tia’s Italian Ice in Hampden? Earns it every time. Their Philly-style water ice deserves ALL the hype, my personal go-to’s the gelati, and the real kicker is everything here’s vegan, gluten-free AND nut-free. With 22-plus water ice flavors and 9 specialty combos, it’s the rare dessert stop where the whole crew can share and nobody gets left out, which is a big reason my mom and I keep coming back. If you’re on The Avenue in Baltimore and craving something cold and sweet, this one’s a must, Nomsters.

What Makes Tia’s a Standout Dessert Spot in Baltimore

Real-deal Philly-style water ice isn’t easy to find around here, and Tia’s does it right. Makes sense too, the shop’s Black-owned and family-run, with more than three decades of roots in West Philly before landing in Baltimore. Between that pedigree, the flavor count, and the fact it’s ALL allergy-friendly, it stands out from spots where the vegan or gluten-free option is an afterthought.

What Is Water Ice, and How Is Gelati Different?

If you didn’t grow up around Philly, water ice might be new to you. It’s a smooth, fruit-flavored frozen dessert, think somewhere between Italian ice and sorbet, made without any dairy, so it’s naturally lighter and more refreshing than ice cream. Gelati (Tia’s specialty and my personal pick) takes it a step further by layering that water ice with creamy soft serve in the same cup, so you get icy and creamy in every bite. Deciding between the two? Get straight water ice when you want something light and fruity, and get a gelati when you want the best of both worlds.

What to Order at Tia’s

Here’s what I get and what my family goes for.

Gelati

This is my go-to, every single time. Layered water ice and creamy soft serve in one cup for that icy-meets-creamy texture, and if you’re new to Tia’s, honestly just start here.

Ice Cream and the Flavors

The water ice is the main event, with 22-plus flavors and 9 specialty combos, so the only hard part’s narrowing it down. Since it’s all vegan, gluten-free, and nut-free, you can hand a cup to just about anyone in your group. I won’t tell you which flavor to get (that’s half the fun) but you really can’t go wrong. My mom’s a HUGE fan of their ice cream too, so between us we’ve covered a lot of ground, and if you want something savory, they also do beef patties, pretzels and hot dogs.

A Family Favorite of Ours

This one’s become a shared spot for me and my mom, which is a big part of why I keep going back. It’s the kind of place where everyone finds their thing, and that makes it an easy stop whenever we’re craving something sweet. If you’re a frozen-treat person like me, I’ve also got Jimmie Cone’s soft serve on the blog.

The Vibe and Experience

Tia’s sits right on The Avenue (W 36th St) in Hampden, which is one of Baltimore’s most fun, walkable strips for shopping and eating. It’s a walk-up, order-and-go setup with a few chairs out front rather than a sit-down spot, so it’s easy to grab your cup and keep strolling. Family-friendly and casual, exactly what you want on a warm day.

If you’re wondering if Tia’s is worth the visit, the short answer’s YES, every time. And not just because the water ice is legit. It’s genuinely allergy-friendly instead of allergy-friendly-as-an-afterthought, it sits on one of Baltimore’s most fun walkable strips, and it’s the kind of spot where everyone in the group finds their thing. On a warm day in Hampden, that combo’s tough to beat.
