Okay Nomsters, I need to tell you about my new favorite way to spend an afternoon in Ellicott City, and for once it does not involve eating (I know, shocking coming from me). I finally checked out The Pottery Stop with Minje, and we had an absolute blast! It’s a paint-your-own pottery studio tucked into the shopping center at Route 40 and St Johns Lane, and it’s been around for a solid twenty years, which tells you everything about how much locals love it.
You pick a piece, grab your colors, and settle in for a couple hours of low-key, screen-free fun. The instructors are so kind and helpful, there are SO many cute pieces to choose from, and on the day we went we got to paint alongside a bunch of rescue kittens (more on that later, because it was the cutest thing ever). If you’ve been hunting for a date idea or a rainy-day activity that isn’t just dinner and a movie, this one’s a gem.

What Makes The Pottery Stop A Must Visit
What sets this place apart is how easy they make it for total beginners to leave with something they’re actually proud of. You don’t need a single ounce of artistic talent (trust me, I tested that theory). They’ve got over 75 glaze colors and dozens of techniques, and the staff walks you through all of it, so you’re never just staring at a blank mug wondering what to do next. Beyond the classic pottery painting, they also do fused glass and stoneware, so there’s always a new project waiting to pull you back in.
It’s genuinely one of the few spots around where you can bring a five year old, a first date, and your whole friend group and everyone leaves happy. That range is rare, and it’s a big part of why the studio’s stayed a Howard County staple for two decades.
What You’ll Make at The Pottery Stop
Here’s the fun part, deciding what to actually make. The pricing’s all-inclusive, so whatever you pick covers the piece itself, all the glazes and supplies, and the kiln firing, with no separate studio fee tacked on at the end. Most pieces run somewhere in the $25 to $60 range.

Paint-Your-Own Pottery ($25 to $60 per piece)
This is the main event and what most people come for. You choose from a huge wall of blank ceramics (mugs, bowls, plates, figurines, ornaments, you name it), then paint it however you want with their glazes. It’s beginner-friendly to the max, and the staff will show you techniques like sponging, layering, and stenciling if you want to get a little fancy. It’s great for all ages, and honestly it’s one of the most relaxing ways I’ve spent an afternoon in a while. You leave your piece behind to be fired, and they text you when it’s ready to pick up, usually about a week later.
Fused Glass
If you want to try something a little different, their fused glass projects are so pretty. You arrange cut glass pieces into a design (think little dishes, ornaments, or sun-catchers), and they fuse it all together in the kiln. It’s better suited for older kids and adults since you’re handling glass, and the finished pieces come back in about 7 to 10 days. This is the one I’d pick for a date night, it feels a touch more grown-up.
Stoneware
Stoneware’s the upgrade if you want something you’ll actually use every day. These pieces are oven, dishwasher, and microwave safe, so that mug or bowl you make can go straight into your real-life rotation. It takes a little longer to get back, around 10 to 14 days, but a handmade mug you drink your coffee out of every morning? Worth the wait. This one leans adults and teens.
How Does Paint-Your-Own Pottery Work Here?
It’s easier than you’d think. You show up, pick your piece, and pay based on what you choose. Then you paint at your own pace (most visits run about an hour and a half to two hours), leave it to be fired, and come back when they text you it’s ready. You can reserve a spot online up to twelve hours ahead, which I’d definitely do on weekends and holidays because they get packed.
Walk-ins are welcome on quieter weekdays, but they’re not guaranteed during busy times. One fun bonus, they let you bring your own snacks and drinks, and it’s BYOB for anyone 21 and up, so you can absolutely turn this into a chill wine-and-paint night with your friends.
Painting Pottery with Rescue Kittens Made My Whole Week
Okay, now the part I promised. The day Minje and I went, The Pottery Stop was hosting one of their Paint with Kittens events in partnership with @furrypawsfosterinn, a volunteer-run cat and dog rescue. So there we were, painting pottery with adoptable kittens climbing all over us, and I did not want to leave! These are special events they run every so often, not an everyday thing, so keep an eye on their website and socials if painting next to a purring kitten sounds like your idea of heaven, because same. A huge thanks to their team for having us.
The Vibe and Experience
The vibe here’s cozy, creative, and refreshingly unhurried. It’s the kind of place where an afternoon just melts away and you look up realizing you’ve been happily painting for two hours. It works for basically everyone: families with little kids, teens, first dates, birthday parties, or a solo reset day. And if you want to keep the outing going afterward, Matcha Time Gift Shop is another cute Ellicott City spot worth a look.

Is The Pottery Stop Worth A Visit?
For a spot that’s affordable, endlessly repeatable, and leaves you with something handmade to keep, The Pottery Stop’s one of my favorite non-food things to do in Ellicott City. It’s exactly the kind of place I’d point you to for a date or a family outing that isn’t just another dinner reservation. If you want to build a whole day around it, I’ve got a full guide to a perfect day in Old Ellicott City with more spots to hit nearby. Beginner or seasoned mug-painter, you’re going to have a good time here.
So make an afternoon of it: paint a piece, then walk over and grab a coffee at Cafe June to admire your handiwork while it fires. Have you guys tried pottery painting yet? Tell me what you’d make in the comments, Nomsters, and save this for your next date night or rainy Saturday.
