Day 12 of eating at 100 Asian restaurants in the DMV, and this one’s a spot I’ve been quietly obsessed with for years. Thai Chef in Rockville is easily one of the prettiest restaurants in Maryland, and I don’t say that lightly. The whole space was custom made in Thailand, and the second you walk in, you get it.
But a gorgeous room only gets you so far, so here’s the real headline: Chalisa’s food more than backs it up. I’ve never had a bad meal here, and the Catfish Dry Curry’s the dish I’d send you in for first. Add the Tom Yum Fried Rice, a plate of Pad Thai, and one of their craft cocktails, and you’ve basically got my ideal lunch. It sits right in Rockville Town Square, so it’s an easy one to build a whole afternoon around.

What Makes Thai Chef a Standout Spot?
So what actually sets Thai Chef apart? It’s the mix of Bangkok street food done seriously and a room that feels like a mini trip to Thailand. Chalisa runs it with her mom, and that street-food-first point of view shows up all over the menu, from the punchy curries to the fried rice.
This isn’t your standard strip-mall Thai takeout. The plating’s pretty, the flavors are bold, and there’s a real craft-cocktail program on top of it, which you don’t get at most Thai spots. Rockville’s honestly stacked with great Asian food (Amore Eats for Taiwanese comfort food is another favorite of mine), and Thai Chef more than holds its own in that lineup. It’s the kind of place that works just as well for a solo lunch as it does for date night.
What to Order at Thai Chef
Chalisa treated us to lunch this visit (thank you again!), and these are the three dishes I’d tell you to order first. Come hungry.
Catfish Dry Curry ($22)
This is THE dish, and the one I steer everyone toward first. It’s crispy deep-fried catfish sauteed with green peppercorns, Thai eggplant, red pepper, and Thai basil in a bold curry paste, so there’s crunch, herby aromatics, and that signature curry punch all in one bite. Fair warning, a curry like this brings some heat, so order accordingly. If you only try one thing here, make it this.

Tom Yum Fried Rice ($18)
Tom yum’s that iconic hot-and-sour Thai flavor, and working it into fried rice is such a smart move. It’s one of the three Chalisa dishes I always point people to, and it’s a lot more “interesting” than your standard fried rice. If you’re a tom yum soup person, you’ll get exactly why this one works.
Pad Thai ($18, $3 extra for shrimp)
I know, I know, pad thai’s the safe order, but it’s one of the three I always recommend here, so don’t sleep on it. Add the shrimp for just $3 more, it’s an easy upgrade. And if you want to see how creative the DMV pad thai game can get, Sense of Thai in Bethesda does the most unique one I’ve tried, but a well-made classic like this never misses.
Also worth your while: their craft cocktails, so take a look at what they’ve got. Everything I’ve had here is yum, so save room and plan to graze.
Wait, Thai Chef Has Its Own Popcorn Line?
Okay, this part’s SO fun. Thai Chef has its own popcorn line, and yes, you read that right. The flavors lean into Thai classics like mango sticky rice, pad thai, and thai chili lime, which is such a clever, only-here kind of thing. Chalisa sent us home with a bag of each flavor, so a proper taste test’s coming down the road (stay tuned for that one).
The brand’s called Party Of, and it was started by four Thai-American sisters, so there’s a real family story behind it too. You can grab it right at the restaurant, and it makes the perfect little edible souvenir, or a gift for the friend who’s obsessed with snacks.
The Vibe and Experience
I keep calling this the prettiest restaurant in MD, so let me paint the picture. The decor was custom made in Thailand, and it’s full of little wow moments, think a tuk tuk parked in the lobby, carousel horses, and hanging bird cages. It’s stunning, and it makes even a random weekday lunch feel like an occasion.
The space is polished but still warm, and with the craft cocktails in the mix, it easily doubles as a date-night spot. It’s in Rockville Town Square too, so you can pair it with a walk around the plaza after dinner. Whether you’re going solo, bringing a date, or treating your parents, it just feels a little special.

Is Thai Chef Worth the Trip?
Yes, a hundred percent. Thai Chef’s one of my favorite Thai spots in the DMV, full stop, and the fact that it’s this beautiful AND this delicious almost feels unfair. It’s worth it whether you’re local to Rockville or driving in for a pretty date-night dinner. If you’re building out a whole Rockville food day, I’ve got a roundup of must-try spots in the area to pair it with. Go hungry, order the catfish curry, and thank me later.
