I couldn’t be more excited to tell you guys about Takumi! It’s newish to the area and located in the mall Mall (where the old Starbuck’s used to be). Minje and I were honestly super impressed – if you haven’t gone yet, RUN because they seriously have some of the BEST sushi in Columbia. Honestly, they are a strong contender for my “8 Must Try Sushi Restaurants in Maryland” roundup.
The interior’s so nice, and it’s a great spot for date night. The pricing may seem steep, but it’s actually SUPER reasonable for the quality you get. They get their fish flown in fresh, and the chef’s a sushi BEAST! His resume is very impressive, and he used to work at one of my favorite sushi spot’s in DC (Sushi Ogawa). If you love hunting down under-the-radar sushi like this, “Sushi Ya: Hidden Gem in Owings Mills” is another one worth the drive.
Anywho, if you’re looking for recommendations, here are some must try dishes for you guys:
- Hamachi Carpaccio ($16): this app was fresh as can be and topped with jalapeno, yuzu dressing, and tobiko. It’s easily one of the BEST sushi starters I’ve ever had, and I can’t wait to get it again, lol. It has a nice kick to it which I love, and each bite was pure perfection.
- Tuna Tartare ($16): this app is a MUST if you like tuna – the presentation was stunning, and I loved the basil pesto they used. This featured avocado, tobiko and scallion!
- Salmon Belly ($8) + O-Toro ($18): wow, this was SO FREAKING GOOD! The o-toro was a splurge but man, was it tasty. Super high quality cuts for sure, and the fish just melted in our mouths.
- Sushi Dinner ($32): 10 pieces of assorted nigiri with a tuna roll. This was such a good deal! NOTE: chef marinates their rice so you don’t really even need to use soy sauce.
In addition to sushi, they also offer delicious rolls, ramen + udon, donburi, and lots of other hot dishes. They also have a great happy hour, AND if you go on your birthday, they’ll give you a free dessert! The vibes are great for a special occasion, but I think it’s a wonderful spot for a quick bite as well. When I’m after a more casual, grab-a-plate sushi fix, “New to Rockville: Uzu Revolving Sushi” is a fun one too.
