Alright SO, my parents were visiting, and when they asked me to get good bread, I took that request VERY seriously, lol. I happened to be in Gaithersburg for a client shoot, so I stopped by Spring Mill Bread on Darnestown Road to pick up some loaves.
Spring Mill Bread Co is a women-owned artisan bakery that’s been baking in Montgomery County since 1993, and they’ve earned the reputation to match: three consecutive wins for Best Specialty Bread from Bethesda magazine and a genuinely loyal local following. I grabbed a rustic white sourdough ($9.50), honey whole wheat ($7.25), and a blueberry scone for my mom, and everything was a hit. The parents approved, the bread was delish, and I’m def going back. Gaithersburg’s got a real gem here, Nomsters.

What Makes Spring Mill Bread a Standout Artisan Bakery in Gaithersburg
Spring Mill Bread’s been a Gaithersburg institution for over 30 years, and the thing that sets it apart is the commitment to small-batch, daily baking. The loaves are made fresh every day, and the selection rotates throughout the week, so what’s available on Tuesday might be different from what’s there on Friday. Some items bake on specific days: challah’s a Friday-only thing and the gluten-free spelt loaf comes out on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Checking their website before you go is definitely the move so you don’t miss the loaf you’re after.
The bakery’s inside The Shops at Potomac Valley on Darnestown Road, and it’s strictly carryout and pickup. The space is small and focused on the baking operation, so going in knowing what you want makes everything smoother. If you’re already in the Gaithersburg area and want to make a full morning of it, Pate a Cake is another great bakery nearby worth adding to the list.

What to Order at Spring Mill Bread
Here’s what I grabbed on my visit:
Rustic White Sourdough ($9.50)
The sourdough was a real standout. The crust’s beautifully chewy with the perfect amount of tang, which I know sounds like basic sourdough praise but TRUST ME on this one. I made breakfast toast at home with it and we all loved it, my parents included, and that’s saying something, lol. They sliced the loaf up for me before bagging it upon request, which is such a nice touch. At $9.50 for an artisan loaf of this quality, it’s genuinely excellent value.
Honey Whole Wheat ($7.25)
The honey whole wheat’s hearty and has a nice density without being dry or heavy, which can be the issue with whole wheat breads sometimes. I’ve been using mine at home as a makeshift chicken burger bun and it’s been SO good for that. It’s hearty with a nice density without being dry or heavy, which can be the issue with whole wheat breads sometimes. Really versatile and great for everyday use.
Blueberry Scone
I grabbed this for my mom since scones are her thing, and she split it with me. Buttery with the right amount of sweet, and perfect with a morning coffee. If scones are your weakness, def pick one up while you’re here. On my list for next time: the apple streusel sourdough and the jalapeno cheddar sourdough. I need both of those in my life immediately, lol.
Is Spring Mill Bread Carryout Only?
Yes! Spring Mill Bread Co is strictly carryout and pickup; there’s no dine-in seating. The space is small and focused entirely on the baking operation, so come in knowing what you want or check their website first since the selection rotates daily. The good news: there’s plenty of free parking at the shopping center, so getting in and out is easy. You can also check springmillbread.com for their online ordering page, though availability may vary by season.
The Vibe and Experience
Spring Mill Bread’s got that classic neighborhood bakery feel. The bread’s always fresh and the space is small and focused on the baking operation. They’ll slice your loaf for you on request, and they give out a bread loyalty card at checkout where you can earn a free loaf over time. I lost mine almost immediately, which is very on-brand for me, lol, so I’ll need to get a new one on my next visit. For a shopping center bakery, this place punches way above its weight. If you’re exploring more spots in Gaithersburg, my Gaithersburg restaurant guide has plenty more to add to the list.
