Okay Nomsters, I think I just found my new favorite bar in Baltimore, and it’s tucked into a quiet corner of Fells Point. Southpaw’s the kind of spot you walk into once and immediately start planning your next visit, and honestly, I get why it’s picking up James Beard buzz.
There’s no flashy design or high-brow concept here, it’s a small, warm, lived-in room where the drinks are riffs on the classics and every single one’s executed super well. The bartenders never missed a beat checking in on us, and yeah, I’m already a HUGE fan! The other thing you need to know before we get into it: get the smashburger with curly fries. It’s seriously elite, and it made a great cocktail night even better. Here’s everything that makes this Fells Point gem worth a visit.

What Makes Southpaw a Standout Cocktail Bar
Southpaw’s the work of Doug Atwell, a Baltimore bartender with 20-plus years behind the stick, and that depth of experience shows. Earlier this year he earned a 2026 James Beard Award semifinalist nod for Outstanding Professional in Cocktail Service, which is a serious deal in the bar world.
What sets the place apart isn’t gimmicks though, it’s the opposite. The whole vibe’s less is more: a tight menu of well-made drinks, a room with maybe a dozen stools and a few tables, and a team that actually cares if you’re having a good time. It feels like a neighborhood bar that’s been part of Fells Point forever. That balance of craft and comfort’s exactly why it stands out.
What to Drink (and Eat) at Southpaw
This is a bar first, so let’s start with the drinks, but do NOT sleep on the food.
The Cocktails
The cocktail list leans on riffs of the classics, and everything we tried was executed super well, no unnecessary flair. If you’re a classics person, their Forever Happy Hour section’s a steal: staples like the Old-Fashioned, Sazerac, daiquiri, dry martini, and a Moscow Mule all run around $9.
They’ve also got a playful “Let’s Get Weird” side of the menu with stuff like a Spagett (a spritz built on a High Life) for about $6. Whether you want something dialed-in or a little goofy, the bar delivers.

The Smashburger and Curly Fries
Now the smashburger. Get it, seriously! The smashburger and curly fries are the perfect thing to soak up a couple of cocktails, and it’s the move I’d tell anyone walking in for the first time.
Beyond the Burger
They also do a plant-based patty if you want to keep it meat-free, and there’s a chicken sandwich on the menu I didn’t get to this time but fully plan to try next. For a cocktail bar, the little food menu punches way above its weight.
The Perfect Cheers Bar
Here’s the thing that really got me: Southpaw feels like YOUR bar, even on a first visit. It’s warm and a little worn-in in the best way, the kind of place where the bartenders check in right away and you never feel rushed or ignored, it just feels like a room built for the neighborhood. That’s a rare thing, and it’s why I keep calling it a Cheers bar. If you’ve been hunting for a low-key spot where you can actually hear your friends and the drinks are legit, this is it.
The Vibe and Experience
The space itself’s tiny, and that’s part of the charm, we’re talking around a dozen stools and a handful of tables tucked into a corner of Fleet and Bond, a little off the main Fells Point drag. It’s an easy place to settle into for a while. I’d say it’s perfect for a low-key date, a catch-up with one or two friends, or even a solo drink at the bar where the bartenders keep you company. If you love a good waterfront Baltimore night too, La Jetee‘s another gorgeous spot nearby to keep on your list.

Is Southpaw Worth the Hype?
Absolutely, YES. Southpaw’s my new favorite bar in Baltimore, and it’s not particularly close. If you want craft cocktails without the attitude, a killer smashburger, and a room that feels like it’s been yours for years, this is a must. It’s ideal for a chill date or a low-key night with people you actually want to talk to. For more spots in that lane, my roundup of Baltimore bars perfect for date night has you covered.
