I’ve been on a mission to find the best soup dumplings in Maryland, and wow, Shanghai Taste delivered. Several of you told me to go, and I’m so glad I listened because this place is a GEM. I already can’t wait to go back. FYI, I go back and forth between them and Bob’s, but you can’t go wrong with either spot IMO.
A Little History…
Tucked in Rockville’s Woodley Gardens Shopping Center, Shanghai Taste has been part of the community for over a decade (open since around 2012–2013). It’s long been known locally for virtuoso soup dumplings and Shanghainese staples – The Washington Post even spotlighted them back in 2016 and it continues to show up on “best of” maps and guides today.
What We Ordered (…and What You Should Too)
- Pork Soup Dumpling aka Xiao Long Bao ($9.95 for 8 pcs) – SO GOOD. Juicy, balanced, and super slurpable. They also do a pork & crab version if you want to level up. 100/10 – please get these.
- Sheng Jian Bao ($9.50) – This shocked me in the best way. They’re pan-fried soup dumplings with a crisp bottom and a slightly fluffier, bun-like top – think soup dumplings fused with a pork bun. Another absolute must.
- Shumai Stuffed with Glutinous Rice ($7.95) – If you love sticky rice textures, this one’s for you: chewy, satisfying, and so fun to eat.
- Noodle with Shredded Beef & Pepper ($13.95) – Brothless, saucy, and SO tasty. Noodles were perfectly cooked, beef was flavorful and tender. Great for sharing.
