Okay, I’m obsessed! San Pancho in Takoma Park makes some of the best burritos I’ve had in the DMV, and I’m already plotting my next visit. The whole concept is SF Mission-style burritos (their tagline is literally “Born in La Mission”), brought here by a team that spent years living in San Francisco.
Everything’s made from scratch, and get this, the Sonoran-style tortillas are actually imported from Mexico. Deke and I split a barbacoa breakfast burrito and a shrimp super burrito, and both were next level. It’s a tiny counter-service spot, so it’s casual, quick and easy, but the food eats like someone really cares back there. If you want a serious burrito in Takoma Park, this is the one, Nomsters.

Why San Pancho Is Worth Trying in Takoma Park
So what makes San Pancho different? It’s all in that Mission-style approach. The owners spent years in San Francisco (they’re also the team behind Cielo Rojo, which used to live in this exact space before moving up the street), and they wanted to bring real SF Mission burritos to the area.
That means big, hefty, foil-wrapped burritos built on quality ingredients. The tortillas are Sonoran-style and imported from Mexico, the salsas are house-made (that avocado salsa verde, oh my), and even the vegan option gets love with a house-made mushroom-and-tofu chorizo. It’s a small kitchen doing one very specific thing really well, and that focus is exactly why it stands out.

What to Order at San Pancho
Here’s everything we got, plus a few things good to know about the menu.
Barbacoa Breakfast Burrito ($15)
This might be one of the best breakfast burritos I’ve ever had, full stop. It’s melty cheese and barbacoa de res stuffed with poblano and onion, scrambled eggs and refried pinto beans, and it comes with a house avocado salsa verde that’s honestly next level.
We lucked out and caught the breakfast window right before it ended, so we grabbed one from breakfast AND one from lunch, hehe. If you can make it in the morning, get this one! If you love a good breakfast spot in Takoma Park, Motorkat‘s breakfast sandwich is another local favorite worth knowing.
Super Burrito ($18 with shrimp)
The Super Burrito is the classic Mission move, loaded up with Mexican rice, pinto beans, cilantro, onions, pico, melted cheese, guac, sour cream, and here, shrimp in a chile-pepper sauce. The flavors were really great and the shrimp was cooked perfectly. It’s a big, satisfying burrito, so come hungry or plan on happy leftovers.
The Drinks ($5 each)
Do not sleep on the drinks. The Cold Brew and Horchata was SO good, and the Tamarindo-Chia (house-made tamarind juice with chia, lime and agave) was such a refreshing, slightly tangy pick. At five bucks each, they’re an easy yes.
A few more menu notes:
- They do tortas (including a Torta Cubana at weekday lunch) and quesadillas too.
- There’s a vegan mushroom-and-tofu chorizo if you’re plant-based.
- The daily menu runs from 11am, with breakfast served in the mornings.
What Is a Mission-Style Burrito?
If you’re new to the term, a Mission-style burrito comes from San Francisco’s Mission District, going all the way back to the 1960s. The signature is a big steamed flour tortilla wrapped around rice, beans, your protein, salsa, cheese, sour cream and guac, then wrapped up tight in foil so it holds together as you eat.
The main difference from a regular burrito is the size and structure: these are hefty, fully loaded, and built to be a whole meal in one hand. That’s exactly what San Pancho’s going for, and they absolutely nail it.

The Vibe and Experience
San Pancho’s a small, casual spot: you order at the counter, and there’s seating for around 20 inside plus a patio when the weather cooperates. The space is full of fun, colorful Mission-inspired decor, and the food comes out fast, usually in under 10 minutes, which makes it a great quick lunch. Seating can get competitive in the evening, so keep that in mind. Another Takoma Park counter spot worth knowing is Soko Butcher, home to some of the best sandwiches in the DMV.

Is San Pancho Worth A Visit?
100% YES. San Pancho’s up there with my favorite burritos in the whole DMV, and the fact that they’re making everything from scratch with imported tortillas puts it right over the top. It’s affordable, quick, and that breakfast burrito alone is worth the trip! If you want to build a whole Takoma Park food day around it, my perfect day in Takoma Park has a few more spots I love in the area.
Have you guys been to San Pancho yet? Let me know your go-to burrito order in the comments, Nomsters, and tell me which salsa I need to try next (that habanero’s calling my name). Save this for your next Takoma Park run.
