Some of the best desserts in the DMV are hiding in plain sight, tucked into a quiet town center out in Montgomery County. That is exactly where I found Pâte à Cake, a cozy Asian bakery in Gaithersburg that I am now completely OBSESSED with, Nomsters. One visit and I was already planning my next one.
If you have followed me through my favorite places to eat in Gaithersburg, you know this little city quietly punches way above its weight. Pâte à Cake is the newest spot to earn a permanent place on that list.
Koi Sushi Gaithersburg at Rio Lakefront is the latest proof: a brand-new sushi spot that brings some real quality to the area.
What Makes Pâte à Cake a Standout Asian Bakery in Gaithersburg
Pâte à Cake blends French pastry technique with Asian flavors and styles, which is why the display case is full of cakes that look almost too pretty to eat. Think clean lines, soft colors, and that light, fluffy texture Asian bakeries do so well. Nothing here is overly sweet, so you get all of the flavor without the sugar crash afterward.
That balance is the whole reason I love a good Asian pastry shop in Maryland. The cakes are beautiful enough to photograph (and trust me, you will), but they are made to actually eat and enjoy, not just to look at. If you are the type who finds the prettiest dessert in the case and orders it on sight, you are going to have a very hard time choosing here.

What to Order at Pâte à Cake
I went in and grabbed three things to start. Here is everything I tried and what I thought.
Soymilk Custard Cake ($8.50)
This was my favorite of the bunch. A delicate sponge layered with a silky soymilk custard, it is light as air and barely sweet, with a gentle nuttiness from the soymilk that keeps you reaching back for another bite. If you only get one thing, make it this one.
Double Cheesecake ($7.50)
Two layers of cheesecake, creamy and rich but still somehow light, never dense or heavy. It is the kind of slice that feels indulgent without weighing you down, which is exactly what I want from these light, fluffy cakes in Gaithersburg.
Chocolate Mousse ($7.50)
Airy whipped chocolate that is rich without being too much. My chocolate-loving friends would lose it over this one, and it rounds out the trio perfectly if you are sharing a few slices across the table.
Still on My List: Japanese Cheesecake and Black Sesame Cake
I had my eye on the Japanese cheesecake in Gaithersburg and the black sesame cake, two things I keep hearing about but have not gotten to yet. If you get to them before I do, please let me know if they are as good as I am imagining. I am betting yes. You guys know I am a sucker for nutty, toasty flavors like black sesame.
The Real Test: My Parents Approved
Here is how you know a dessert is the real deal. I took a few bites at the shop because I couldn’t resist, lol, but I saved the rest to share with my parents, aka the ultimate test. Both my mom and dad enjoyed them as much as I did, and they were so impressed that they insisted we go back the next time they visit. When the parents are already planning the return trip, you know it is good.

The Vibe and Experience
The shop itself is cozy and welcoming, the sort of place you want to linger in with a coffee and a slice. It sits inside Spectrum Town Center, so there is easy free street parking right out front, and you can pop in for a quick treat or settle in for a bit. It gives me the same comforting, family-run energy as one of my other favorite bakeries in the area, Les Delices in Rockville, the kind of neighborhood cake shop you end up loving for the people as much as the pastries.
