They’ve been serving sushi here since 1981…
Day 32 of #100AsianRestaurantsInMaryland took me to a true classic in Rockville: Niwano Hana, a cozy Japanese restaurant that’s been open since 1981. And I’ll be honest… I can’t believe this was my first time dining here.
They’ve been a staple on Rockville Pike for decades, with a menu full of Japanese comfort dishes, but they’re most famous for their specialty rolls, and after this visit, I totally get why.
Being open for over 40 years isn’t accidental. It’s a reflection of consistency, loyal regulars, and a menu that keeps people coming back. For many Montgomery County locals, this is one of those dependable, nostalgic sushi spots that’s been part of the community for years. If you’re searching for a long-standing Japanese restaurant in Rockville, this is one of the OGs.
For something newer in the Japanese noodle space just a few miles over in Bethesda, Ramen MENRI is doing scratch-made ramen with a yuzu shio and a rich zao stamina bowl that are both seriously worth the drive. And if you’re curious what the newer side of the MoCo Japanese scene looks like, Sushi Masato in Bethesda just brought Osaka-style pressed sushi to the area, which is a pretty exciting contrast.
What Niwano Hana Is Known For
Even though the menu includes a little bit of everything, Niwano Hana is especially known for:
- Specialty sushi rolls (the kind you come back for)
- Bento boxes and lunch specials that give you a lot of food for the price
- Classic Japanese comfort dishes beyond sushi, if you’re dining with someone who wants something warm + hearty

Favorites from Niwano Hana
- Chicken Teriyaki & Jambalaya Roll Bento Box ($16.45): This came with a lot of food – definitely a standout deal for lunch IMO. The roll was very tasty, and the chicken teriyaki was cooked nicely (tender and flavorful). If you’re hungry and want variety, this is a strong order.
- Agedashi Tofu ($7): I’m a sucker for this starter, and they do it really well here. The texture of the tofu’s excellent – crisp outside, soft inside – and it’s a sizeable amount, so it’s perfect for sharing (…or keeping to yourself, lol).
- Dragon Roll ($17.95): My fave roll from the meal! This was made with real crab meat and topped with eel, masago, and lots of other yummy tings. The presentation was so cute, and there was a good amount of crab, which I always appreciate.
This was my first time dining here, but I’ll definitely be back to try more of the menu. ALSO the owner, Hongwei, actually owns a bunch of different restaurants in Maryland, including one of my FAVES in Hanover, Pho One O! Small world, right?
