In case you were wondering, the Crispy Maryland Chicken at Mi La Cay is 1000% worth the hype. This Vietnamese gem in Wheaton, MD is an absolute must visit if you want juicy fried chicken, a dipping sauce that’s pure magic, and generous portions that won’t wreck your wallet. I kicked our meal off with the roasted quail and left already plotting my next order, so let me put you on to Mi La Cay in Wheaton.
It’s the kind of neighborhood spot where the food’s done with care and the prices stay friendly, which is exactly my sweet spot. I’ll be honest, I went in mostly for that viral crispy chicken, but I walked out impressed by the whole spread. Here’s everything I got and what’s actually worth ordering.
What Mi La Cay Is Known For

Mi La Cay’s a Vietnamese restaurant in Wheaton, and the menu leans into hearty, home-style plates instead of just the pho-and-banh-mi lineup you might expect. The crispy Maryland chicken’s their calling card, but you’ll also spot Vietnamese classics, a few Thai-leaning noodle dishes like pad thai, and budget banh mis that come in under $10.
Portions here run big, so come hungry and plan on leftovers.
What to Order at Mi La Cay
Here’s everything we got, and it all came together really beautifully.
- Roasted Quail ($12.95): a great little app to kick the meal off. It’s a fun, hands-on start and a nice change from the usual spring rolls, and it got us excited for the rest of the table.
- Crispy Maryland Chicken ($15.95): the star, and the reason to come. The meat’s so juicy under that crackly skin, and the dipping sauce that comes with it is pure magic. This is the one you NEED to order.
- Tomato Rice: this gets its own mention because it’s so ridiculously good, lol. It soaks up everything and rounds out the chicken perfectly. I honestly wasn’t expecting the rice to be a highlight, but it quietly stole a chunk of my attention.
- Banh Mi (under $10): if you want bang for your buck, their banh mis are tasty and budget-friendly. I’d steer you toward the grilled pork, but there are various options to pick from. If banh mi’s your whole mission, Saigon Blvd Banh Mi in Catonsville still holds my top spot for it in MD.
- Pad Thai Noodles ($17.95): Richard, one of the co-owners and chef, generously comped us this one to try, and I’m so glad we did. It’s one of his favorites, and it’s easy to taste why. Think yum rice noodles with shrimp, chicken, fish balls, and veggies, and you get a huge plate for the price.

Is Mi La Cay Budget-Friendly?
Yes, Mi La Cay’s an easy place to eat well without spending a lot. The banh mis land under $10, most mains sit in the mid-teens, and the plates are big enough that you’ll probably take some home. Google lists it in the inexpensive price range, and that tracked with what we paid. Even the pricier plates, like the $17.95 pad thai, feed more than one person, so you’re getting real bang for your buck. For a proper sit-down Vietnamese meal, the value’s tough to beat.

The Vibe at Mi La Cay
The whole meal just felt warm and welcoming, the kind of spot where the chef comes out to share a dish he loves. Richard comping us his beloved pad thai was so generous, and getting a little of his own story behind the plate made it taste even better. It’s clear why the pad thai’s one of his go-tos. Wheaton sits right next to Silver Spring, so Mi La Cay’s an easy add to a bigger Asian-food crawl of the area. If the pad thai here hooks you and you want more Thai noodles nearby, Kook Kai’s in Silver Spring is a short drive and one of my favorite little family-owned Thai spots around.
When Is Mi La Cay Open?
Mi La Cay’s open 10 AM to 8 PM daily, but it’s closed on Thursdays, so keep that one quirk in mind before you make the drive. The daytime hours make it an easy pick for both a weekday lunch and an early dinner, and since the banh mis are quick and budget-friendly, it doubles nicely as a grab-and-go option. Just don’t show up on a Thursday craving that crispy chicken, lol.
