Columbia’s Creamiest Dessert Spot? Meadows Frozen Custard Lives Up to the Hype
To everyone who said Meadows, you were so right. After finally stopping in (thanks to your recs!), we left fully converted. The custard is ridiculously creamy with that glossy, slow‑melt texture you only get from proper frozen custard.
I grabbed a small vanilla (priced $6.50 on our visit) while Deke went candy‑bar maximalist with Reese’s Cups plus extra Reese’s on the side (toppings are add‑ons, with premiums priced a bit higher). I loved mine, shamelessly stole bites of his, and now I’m plotting a return for an affogato or an old‑school root beer float. Clearly I have a serious sweet tooth, which is the same reason I keep a running guide to the best desserts in Baltimore going.
What We Tried
- Vanilla Custard (small) – a clean, classic vanilla profile with a rich dairy backbone. The body is dense yet spoonable, and it coats the palate without feeling heavy. You get that signature custard sheen and a slow, satisfying melt.
- Reese’s Cup Custom – a Reese’s lover’s dream (FOR REALLLLL). Soft ribbons of custard catch the peanut‑butter cups so every bite swings sweet‑salty‑chocolatey. With extra Reese’s, the texture contrast kicks up: smooth custard + candy crunch.
Why Meadows Hits Different

- Heritage + Recipe Consistency – Meadows started in Pennsylvania in 1950 and has expanded across multiple states while keeping the core recipe and classic custard technique. That continuity shows in the texture: tight churn, minimal overrun, and a perfectly balanced sweetness.
- Made Fresh Daily – Expect vanilla and chocolate every day, plus rotating flavors. Because batches are small and fresh, the custard keeps its body and flavor definition so no icy crystals.
- More Than Custard – In addition to custard cups and cones, this spot offers sundaes, shakes/frosts, Arctic Swirls (blended mix‑ins), Italian ice, gelati, smoothies, and take‑home pints.
- Go During Off Hours – Lines can stack on weekends so consider a weekday afternoon for a less hectic experience. Seating is casual with a few tables inside plus benches outside!
What to Order First…
- Velvety Classics: Start with Vanilla or the Flavor of the Day to appreciate the base. From there, add hot fudge, caramel, or a peanut‑butter drizzle if you want nostalgia in a cup.
- Fruity & Refreshing: Go Mango Italian Ice or a Gelati (mango layered with vanilla custard is a sunshiney combo). For sorbet‑style brightness without dairy heaviness, Italian ice is your move.
- Over‑the‑Top Treat: Build a Turtle Sundae (hot fudge, caramel, pecans) or a Reese’s‑everything situation. If you like texture, ask for extra candy or nut crunch. Buttttt after all that’s said and done, I say get a custard for your first treat. And if you want to make a whole dessert day of it, Sugar Plum in Old Ellicott City is a short drive away for round two.
