lak Columbia: A Hidden Gem Inside the Merriweather Lakehouse

July 26, 2026

lāk is one of those hidden gems I had no idea existed until I was already sitting down and falling for it. It’s tucked inside the Merriweather Lakehouse hotel in Columbia, a lakeside, farm-to-table American spot that looks right out over Lake Kittamaqundi, and my dinner there with my mom was great. Full disclosure: this was a hosted visit, but all opinions here are my own. If you want a special-occasion spot near Merriweather that feels polished without being stuffy, this is it, Nomsters. One quick heads up before we dig in, lak’s kitchen is seasonal and from-scratch, so the exact menu rotates through the year, but the experience is the real reason to go.

What Makes lāk in Columbia Worth Knowing

The whole experience felt polished and warm at the same time. The team made us feel completely at home, the dining room looks out over the lake, and the cooking leans into fresh, seasonal, farm-to-table ingredients sourced from local farms. It’s part of the Merriweather Lakehouse (an Autograph Collection hotel by Marriott) and bills itself as Columbia’s fine-dining destination, but it never once felt fussy. There’s also the Rookery Bar and Lounge on-site if you just want a locally crafted beer or a seasonal cocktail by the water. It’s the kind of place that genuinely surprises you, a lovely restaurant hiding inside a hotel most people drive right past. It easily earns a spot on my roundup of must-try restaurants in Columbia.

What I Had (and a Note on the Menu)

I’ll be upfront with you: I visited during a Restaurant Week a while back, so I did their 3-course prix-fixe, and because the menu’s seasonal, some of what I had may have rotated off by now. That said, here’s what stood out. My favorite was a fried shrimp and breaded chicken entree in a crab and cream sauce, rich and comforting in the best way. And save room for dessert, because the carrot cake was the standout of the whole night for me. Everything across the three courses was on point. If you’re going now, I’d lean into whatever’s in season and ask the team for their picks, honestly, that’s the whole point of a spot like this.

What Does Farm-to-Table Actually Mean?

You see ‘farm-to-table’ on menus everywhere, so here’s what it means at a place like lak. It describes a kitchen that sources ingredients directly (or close to it) from local farms, prioritizing what’s fresh and in season over what can ship in year-round. In practice, that’s exactly why the menu changes: the kitchen cooks around what local growers have that month. It usually means a shorter, more focused menu, fresher plates, and a genuine reason to come back in a different season to see what’s new.

The Vibe and Setting

Between the lake views, the attentive service, and the upscale-but-not-fussy American menu, lak’s a natural fit for a date night or a celebration. The dining room’s stunning, and the setting does a lot of the work, you’re right on the water, tucked inside a hotel in Columbia’s walkable Merriweather District. Bonus: it’s a short walk from Merriweather Post Pavilion, so it’s a great pre-show dinner if you’ve got concert tickets. If you’re building a Columbia date-night list, make sure you check out Old Line Kitchen as well!
