Kapow Buddy: Build-Your-Own Thai Bowls at Montgomery Mall

August 13, 2026

I’d been meaning to check this place out for a minute, and I finally made it in. Kapow Buddy is a build-your-own Thai bowl spot tucked inside Westfield Montgomery mall in Bethesda, and it’s a fairly solid pick when you want a lot of food without a lot of fuss. Bowls start at just $11.45, you choose your base, your protein, a pile of toppings, and two sauces, and they fire it all up fresh for you. The bowls are the move here (the street snacks, less so, more on that in a sec). If you’re doing a mall day or you just need a quick, filling lunch in Bethesda, this one’s a pretty good option, Nomsters.

Kapow Buddy’s currently the only Thai option inside Westfield Montgomery, so if you’re craving something saucy and stir-fried while you shop, this is your spot. The whole concept’s built around customization: you’re basically designing your own bowl from a big lineup of bases, proteins, toppings, and sauces, which means you can go as mild or as fiery, as veggie-heavy or as protein-loaded as you want. It’s fast-casual, so you order at the counter and they cook it fresh, and the portions are generous for the price. That mix of customization, speed, and real value is exactly what makes it work as a mall lunch or an easy weeknight grab.

What to Order at Kapow Buddy

Here’s what I got and how I’d steer you.

The Build-Your-Own Bowl ($11.45)

For $11.45 you pick a base (white, purple, or fried rice, lomein, thin rice noodles, or a green salad), a free protein (chicken, ground pork, tofu, or halal steak), a bunch of toppings like crispy basil, edamame, string beans, and fried wontons, then two sauces. You get a LOT of food for the money, and because you’re building it, you control exactly how it tastes. Want to level up? Crispy pork’s an extra $2.50 and shrimp’s $3. It’s a solid, filling option and easily the best thing on the menu.

Don’t Sleep on the Sauce Combo

The sauces are where your bowl lives or dies, so choose your two wisely. They’ve got a whole range, from their Signature Kapow! and Spicy Kapow! to green curry, yellow curry, peanut, sweet and sour, teriyaki, and yum yum. My tip? Balance your two, one bold and saucy, one that adds richness or heat, so the bowl doesn’t come out one-note. And if you like it fiery, the Thai Spicy Kapow!’s right there on the menu.

Street Snacks (Papaya Salad $8, Pork Skewers $9.50)

I’ll be honest, the street snacks were the weak spot for me. I tried the papaya salad, or som tam ($8), and the pork skewers ($9.50), and I probably wouldn’t order either again, the bowls are just the stronger play here. If you want to branch out, they’ve also got spring rolls, curry puffs, chicken satay, and tom yum soup, but I’d put your money toward a loaded bowl instead.

Is Kapow Buddy Good for Vegetarians and Vegans?

Tofu’s a free protein, and they’ve got a fully vegan Veggie Buddies bowl ($11.45) built on a salad base with tofu and vegetables. A lot of the toppings (string beans, bell peppers, corn, cucumbers, edamame) are plant-based too, and even the papaya salad and the fried tofu snack are labeled vegan on their menu. So if you’re eating plant-based or feeding someone who is, you can build a genuinely satisfying bowl here without much effort. For a proper Thai dessert to finish, Sweeteria in Bethesda is a fun nearby stop, since Kapow Buddy keeps dessert simple with just their Thai tea cookies.

The Vibe and Experience

Kapow Buddy’s a fast-casual counter spot inside the mall (it took over the old Aroma Coffee space near Yogi Castle and GameStop), so this isn’t a sit-down, linen-napkin situation, it’s a quick, easy grab. That makes it perfect for a mall break, a solo lunch, or feeding a family mid-shopping trip without blowing the whole afternoon. Parking’s free in the mall garages, which is always a win. And if you want to make an outing of it, Kako Claw is in the same mall for some claw-machine fun after you eat.

I’d skip the street snacks and put everything toward your bowl. It’s a great quick-lunch or mall-day pick, and if you’re chasing more Thai food around Montgomery County afterward, Kook Kai’s in Silver Spring is a mom-and-pop worth knowing.

Have you guys been to Kapow Buddy yet?! LMK what base-protein-sauce combo you’d build in the comments, Nomsters. Save this for your next Westfield Montgomery run and send it to your mall-food partner in crime.
