Gwenie’s Pastries: A Must-Try Filipino Bakery in Rockville

July 19, 2026

Craving Filipino baked goods in the DMV? Gwenie’s Pastries in Rockville is a 20-year-old bakery that’s a must for ube cheesecake, brioche donuts, and a chocolate bun I couldn’t stop thinking about. It’s moderately priced and perfect for ube lovers or anyone trying Filipino pastries for the first time.

I’ve only made it to their Rockville brick and mortar so far, but they’ve also got locations in Frederick and Arlington, so there’s a decent chance one’s within reach no matter where you’re coming from. Their baked goods are seriously next level, and I left wishing I’d bought one of everything.

What Gwenie’s Pastries Is Known For

This is a Filipino bakery, so you’ll find a case full of Filipino sweets alongside the more familiar donuts and buns. If ube’s new to you, it’s a purple yam that’s a staple in Filipino desserts, naturally sweet with a mellow, nutty flavor, and Gwenie’s leans into it beautifully. The thing I love about a spot like this is that you can grab a classic brioche donut for someone who wants something recognizable AND introduce a friend to their first bite of ube in the same trip.

They’ve built their name on doing both really well. The counter’s stacked with cheesecakes, donuts, buns, and traditional Filipino baked goods, and after 20 years they clearly know what they’re doing. My honest move at a place like this is to grab a mixed box and share, so you can taste a few things instead of committing to just one. A box of these also makes a really nice thing to bring to a gathering, especially if you want to put people onto Filipino sweets they might not have tried.

What to Order at Gwenie’s Pastries

Here’s what I got and what you shouldn’t skip. I’ll be upfront that I didn’t get to try everything (I mean, it’s a whole bakery), but the musts below are the ones I’d send you straight to.

Ube Cheesecake: This is the one to beat. It’s got that gorgeous purple color and a smooth, creamy texture, and the ube flavor comes through clearly without being overly sweet, which is the balance a lot of ube desserts miss. If you only order one thing, make it this. It’s also the item I’d hand a skeptic to win them over on ube.

Brioche Donuts: Soft, pillowy, and just the right amount of rich. These are the kind of donut that reminds you why brioche dough’s such a treat, and they’re a big reason Gwenie’s earned a spot on my roundup of the best donuts in Maryland. You really can’t go wrong here.

Chocolate Bun: Don’t sleep on this one. It’s soft, generously filled, and honestly the item I kept thinking about on the drive home. A must if you’re a chocolate person.

Puto: Their team kindly gave us puto as a complimentary treat, and it was my first time ever trying it. Puto’s a Filipino steamed rice cake, soft and lightly sweet, almost like a little sponge. I got why people grow up loving it, it was super yum and a lovely surprise to end on.

Is Gwenie’s Pastries Good for Filipino Desserts?

Yes, this is one of my go-to spots when I want Filipino sweets done right. Between the ube cheesecake, the traditional puto, and the range of buns and pastries, it covers both the nostalgic classics and the crowd-pleasers. It’s one of the six spots on my roundup of the best Filipino restaurants in Maryland for good reason, and it’s a great low-pressure intro if you’ve never had Filipino baked goods before.

Is Gwenie’s Pastries Affordable?

It sits in the moderate range, and I think it’s well worth it for the quality and portion of what you get. This is a treat-yourself bakery, not a bargain-bin one, but the prices felt fair for hand-crafted Filipino pastries you’re not going to find at a regular grocery store. If you’re building a mixed box to share, it’s an easy, budget-friendly way to sample a bunch of things without dropping a ton.

The Vibe

The Rockville shop’s a straightforward, no-fuss bakery counter, the kind of place you pop into, grab your boxes of goodies, and go. It’s warm and welcoming, and the team was genuinely kind (that surprise puto was such a nice touch). If you’re bakery-hopping around Rockville, it pairs perfectly with Les Delices Bakery, another longtime family-owned Rockville spot I love for cakes and cookies. You could easily make a little sweet-tooth afternoon out of the two.
