Firehouse Deli Is a Hidden Gem in Gaithersburg

December 18, 2025

Okay Nomsters, some of the best lunches happen when you’re just tired, hungry, and not overthinking it. Minje and I were in the Gaithersburg area after work, wanted something quick and easy, and swung into Firehouse Deli on a whim, and wow, this little spot seriously exceeded expectations.

It’s an unassuming mom-and-pop deli that’s been quietly serving the community since 2013, owned by the sweetest Korean couple, and you can truly feel the care and pride they put into every sandwich. That alone had me sold before I even took a bite! If you need a fast, satisfying lunch near Montgomery Village, this Gaithersburg spot is the one, and the Texan Reuben I ordered is still living in my head. Between the classic deli subs, a surprisingly big vegan menu, and some fun tropical drinks, there’s a lot to love here. Here’s everything we got.

What Makes Firehouse Deli a Standout Deli in Gaithersburg

What sets Firehouse Deli apart isn’t one flashy thing, it’s the whole feel of the place. It’s a proper family-run mom-and-pop that’s been feeding this stretch of Gaithersburg since 2013, and that care shows up in the food.

What surprised me most was the range: you’ve got your classic, comforting deli sandwiches AND a surprisingly big vegan menu sitting right next to them, which is not something you find at every corner deli. They also do breakfast until 11am, so it pulls double duty as a morning stop and a lunch spot. It’s the kind of low-key neighborhood counter that locals quietly rely on, and with a 4.6 rating across 170-plus reviews, I’m clearly not the only one who feels that way.

What to Order at Firehouse Deli

We tried a mix of classic, comfort, and plant-based options, and honestly, there wasn’t a miss in the bunch. Here’s what we got and what you should be eyeing.

Texan Reuben ($12.98)

This one was my pick, and I loved it. It’s loaded with jalapeño, coleslaw, Swiss cheese, and spicy Russian dressing, and I got mine on rye bread. The flavors came out bold and balanced with just the right kick, and the whole thing was super satisfying and packed with flavor. If you like a little heat on your Reuben, this is the move, and it’s the first thing I’d send a first-timer toward.

Turkey Avocado ($10.98)

This was Minje’s choice, and she really enjoyed it. It’s stacked with turkey, lettuce, tomato, avocado, and ranch, so it’s a classic, comforting deli sandwich done right. Nothing trying too hard, just a solid, well-built turkey sando that hits when you want something familiar and easy. A safe, happy pick if the spicier stuff isn’t your thing.

Vegan Southwest Chicken Wrap ($12.95)

Ok but let’s talk about this one, because I’m a big fan of how much plant-based stuff Firehouse actually carries. I’d heard amazing things about their plant-based chorizo, but they were sold out (next time!), so I went with the Southwest wrap instead. It’s made with vegan crispy chicken, lettuce, tomato, black beans, corn, avocado, cilantro, and vegan chipotle sauce, all wrapped up in a tomato tortilla, and it was SO good. The flavors were on point and I’d 100% order it again. My one small note is I wished there was a touch more of the plant-based chicken, but overall I was really happy with it.

Wash it all down with one of their drinks, too. Alongside the standard beverages you’d expect at a deli, they’ve got fun tropical options, so Minje went with the guava and I chose the soursop. Both were refreshing and delish, and a nice little surprise from a counter deli.

Does Firehouse Deli Have a Big Vegan Menu?

Short answer, yes, and it’s better than a lot of dedicated vegan spots I’ve tried. Firehouse keeps a whole clearly labeled plant-based section, so beyond the Southwest wrap and that chorizo I still need to go back for, you’ll find things like a vegan Reuben, a vegan Italian sub, a vegan meatball sub, and a vegan turkey avocado that mirror the meat classics almost one for one.

There’s even a vegan sausage, egg, and cheese on the breakfast side, plus vegan cupcakes and cookies if you want something sweet. If you’re vegan, or just eat plant-based sometimes, it’s an easy spot to bring the whole group without anyone getting stuck with a sad side salad. That range next to the traditional deli fare is a big part of why this place stuck with me.

The Vibe and Experience

Firehouse Deli is primarily a carryout spot, so don’t come expecting a big sit-down setup. There are a couple of seats inside and three tables outside, which is perfect for grabbing your food and posting up if the weather’s nice, otherwise most folks order and go. Parking’s easy at the Montgomery Village Ave plaza, and the patio’s pet-friendly if you’ve got a pup along for the errands run.

The best part, though, is the people. This is a small, family-run counter where you feel the pride they take in what they hand you, and that warmth is what turns a random after-work lunch into a spot you actually want to come back to. If you want a totally different Gaithersburg lunch on another day, Neko Nook Cafe over in Kentlands does Japanese sandos on shokupan with matcha drinks in a cozy, cat-themed space.

Is Firehouse Deli Worth A Visit?

For a quick, satisfying lunch in Gaithersburg, this little mom-and-pop punches way above its size, whether you want a bold, spicy Texan Reuben or one of the best vegan spreads around. It’s affordable, the people are lovely, and it’s exactly the kind of neighborhood spot I love putting Nomsters on to. If you’re a bread person working your way around town, Spring Mill Bread is another Gaithersburg favorite of mine for artisan sourdough worth the trip.
