Update: Sadly, Duchess Variety Store has permanently closed. I’m leaving this post up because it was such a fun little find, but the shop is no longer open to visit.
Hey Nomsters! Today, I want to highlight Duchess Variety Store – a gem in Ellicott City that packs a punch with their old-school, affordable sandwiches. I first found out about them through a fellow foodie @charmcityfoodadventures, and after hearing rave reviews from @hellominje, I knew I had to check it out!
To start, this place was *very* busy for a weekday afternoon at 3pm. And no wonder! This spot offers incredible value, and that’s just the beginning.
I got roast beef and ham (two different sandwiches), but Duchess Variety Store offers seven different sammies that come packed with meat at unbelievably budget-friendly prices – we’re talking $2.50-3.50 (!!!!!!!). And you get to choose between white or wheat bread! Free toppings include lettuce, tomato, mayo/mustard, cheese, and onion. These nostalgic sandwiches are reminiscent of the kind your mom would pack you for lunch.
I couldn’t resist getting a bag of salt and vinegar chips, and for those with a sweet tooth, Hershey’s ice cream is available in multiple flavors like butter pecan, mint chocolate chip, and cookies and cream. I highly recommend treating yourself to one of Miss Maggie’s milkshakes. Like their other menu items, it’s super affordable at $3.75 – I got cookies and cream, and it was phenom!
Parking may be a challenge as their lot is on the smaller side, but I hear there’s more space in the back? Also, keep in mind that they are a cash-only establishment so hit up an ATM before you go!
