Okay Nomsters, let me put you on to one of my favorite Thai restaurants in all of Maryland: Dok Khao in Columbia. So when they asked me to come check out their spring Cherry Blossom specials, you already know I said yes! Tucked into the Merriweather District, Dok Khao does Bangkok street food and Southern Thai flavors in a bright, colorful space that they dressed all the way up for the season. The food’s on point and the drinks are seriously good. For the occasion they were running yum dishes like Khao Soi and Phuket Chili Crab, plus a lineup of new cocktails and two coffee drinks I couldn’t stop thinking about. Let me walk you through everything worth ordering.

Why is Dok Khao Worth a Visit?
What I love about Dok Khao is that it doesn’t box itself into one lane. The whole concept pulls from Bangkok’s bustling night markets and chef-owner Pat’s Southern Thai roots, so the menu roams from street-food snacks to bold curries and seafood, and a lot of it leans on fresh, locally sourced ingredients (some straight from the chef’s own garden!). That range is exactly why it’s one of my go-tos in the Merriweather area. It also just feels like a spot that puts care into everything, from the plating to the drink menu. If you’re making a whole afternoon of the Merriweather District, it slots right in with other favorites of mine like Clove & Cardamom, which is basically right next door.
What to Order at Dok Khao
Here’s everything I got this time around, plus what the spot’s known for so you can build the perfect order.
Khao Soi
If you see Khao Soi on the menu, get it, it’s a must. This is a Northern Thai coconut curry noodle soup, and the classic move is egg noodles served two ways: soft ones swimming in the rich, golden broth, and a nest of crispy fried noodles piled on top for crunch. It usually comes with braised protein and a little pile of garnishes (pickled mustard greens, shallots, lime) so you can brighten it up bite by bite. It’s warm, comforting, and just a little spicy the way a good curry noodle bowl should be, and it’s an easy standout on the specials menu.

Phuket Chili Crab
The Phuket Chili Crab is a Southern Thai specialty, and it’s exactly what it sounds like: crab cooked down in a spicy, aromatic chili sauce that’s built for getting your hands messy. This one’s rooted in the seafood-forward cooking of Phuket, so it leans bold and a little fiery. If you’re a seafood person who isn’t scared of some heat, this is your dish. Just maybe grab extra napkins, lol.
The Yuzu Fizz and Lychee Espresso
Don’t skip the drinks here. Dok Khao rolled out a batch of new cocktails plus two coffee drinks for the season, and I tried both coffee drinks: the Yuzu Fizz and the Lychee Espresso. Both were SO good. The Yuzu Fizz brings a bright citrus hit and the Lychee Espresso leans floral and a touch sweet, exactly the notes those ingredients give you. Add both to your order.
What Kind of Thai Food Does Dok Khao Serve?
Great question, because Dok Khao isn’t strictly one regional style. The brand describes it as Bangkok street food, and chef-owner Pat brings in her Southern Thai background too, which is why you’ll see Southern dishes like the Phuket Chili Crab sitting on the same menu as a Northern classic like Khao Soi. In other words, it’s Thai food that spans the country rather than sticking to one region, so it’s a great spot whether you’re chasing curries, noodles, seafood, or street-food style snacks. Spice levels are customizable, so tell them how brave you’re feeling.
The Vibe and Experience
The space is bright and colorful with a little fountain in the middle, and for the Cherry Blossom specials they leaned into a full spring glow-up, so it’s a genuinely cute spot to sit and linger. It works for a date night, a group dinner, or a low-key catch-up over drinks, and there’s a full bar if cocktails are your thing. Fair warning, it gets busy (it’s popular for a reason), so a reservation is smart on weekends. The space is bright and lively, and the Cherry Blossom setup made it feel extra festive.

Is Dok Khao Worth It?
Dok Khao’s one of my favorite Thai spots in Maryland for a reason: the food spans real Thai flavors from north to south, the drinks are a genuine highlight, and the Merriweather setting makes it feel like a whole outing. It sits at a mid-range price, but for the quality and the experience, it’s more than worth it. If you want to keep the Columbia food crawl going, another lovely Merriweather-area option is Lak! And you also have An Loi nearby for great pho.
