Date night with Deke took us out to Columbia, and Nomsters, I’d heard a lot of great things about Chutney Indian Restaurant before we finally pulled the trigger. Short answer? It lived up to every bit of the hype, and I’m already scheming my next trip back.
Chutney’s tucked into Snowden River Parkway, and it’s the kind of Indian spot where the curries have serious flavor, the naan comes out blistered and glossy, and the heat’s there if you ask for it (and you already know I ask for it). We ordered our way through crispy samosas, a big vegetable plate, a Hyderabadi curry I’d never tried before, and honestly more garlic naan than one person should admit to, lol. If you’re anywhere near Howard County and you want Indian food that’s consistent and packed with flavor, this one’s a must!

What Makes Chutney Columbia Special?
Columbia’s got a real lineup of Indian food (Clove & Cardamom is another one I love), but Chutney’s carved out its lane by covering a ton of ground and doing it consistently. The menu runs from North Indian classics to South Indian plates and a handful of Hyderabadi specialties, and the curry bases taste like they’re built in house, not scooped from a tub.
They’re known for their tikka, which I somehow still haven’t gotten to, but everything we did order came out fresh and full of spice. The little things sell it too: you get free raita and a spread of chutneys with your meal, they’ll happily bring seconds, and there’s free wifi if you want to post up and work. It’s a legit date-night spot AND a takeout regular, which is a hard combo to pull off.

What to Order at Chutney
Here’s what we got, and what I’d tell you to build your order around.
Chicken Hyderabadi ($19)
This was my first time trying this curry and I fell for it immediately. It had GREAT heat and the curry was so flavorful, exactly what I want in a good Indian gravy. The spice has real presence, so if you run cold on chili, ask them to take it easy. This is the one I’d order again first!
Aloo Gobi ($17)
Fresh cauliflower and diced potatoes tossed with ginger, garlic and spices, and it had this great little kick running through it. I loved this one and would absolutely order it again. If you’ve never had aloo gobi before, it’s a fantastic gateway veggie dish, and Chutney’s version is one I’d happily get every visit.
Vegetable Samosa ($7)
Crispy, savory and so yum dragged through the tamarind sauce. These are a solid starter, though next time I’m 100% getting the samosa chat instead, because I have zero self control when chaat is on a menu.

Garlic Naan ($5)
Loaded with garlic and cooked to absolute perfection, blistered in all the right spots. Somebody please encourage me to branch out, because I default to the garlic naan every single time, lol. Also worth knowing: ask for their Indian hot sauce if you like real heat, it packs a serious punch, and don’t sleep on that onion chutney, it was the sleeper hit of the table.
What Is Hyderabadi Cuisine?
Hyderabadi food is a rich South-Central Indian style that traces back to the royal Nizam kitchens of Hyderabad, so it leans into bold spice, slow-cooked meats, and that famous layered dum biryani. That’s why the Chicken Hyderabadi tastes deeper and more perfumed than a standard curry, there’s a whole culinary history baked into it. If you mostly know butter chicken and tikka masala, ordering something Hyderabadi is a fun, easy way to taste a different corner of India without leaving Columbia.
The Vibe and Experience
Service was genuinely phenomenal, everyone was kind and attentive, and it really made the whole meal feel special. It’s comfortable enough for a relaxed date night but also totally works if you just want to eat well without fuss. They offer a dinner deal for two, take reservations, and there’s on-site parking, which is never a given. And because they’ve got free wifi and are happy to let you linger, it’s an easy spot to camp out at a table for a bit if you need to.

Is Chutney Really Worth A Visit?
If you’re in Columbia or anywhere in Howard County and you want Indian food that’s flavorful, spice-forward and reliably good, Chutney’s an easy yes. It’s not as fancy as Ananda over in Maple Lawn, but it’s still really nice. And it’s a consistent, generous, come-back-again kind of spot that I’m confident you’ll love!
Have you guys been to Chutney yet? Let me know what you order (and please tell me if the tikka’s as good as everyone says so I finally branch out), Nomsters. Save this for your next Columbia date night and send it to your favorite spice-lover.
