Chuan Tian Xia Rockville: Sichuan Food You Need to Try

March 8, 2026

I’m always on the hunt for authentic Sichuan food in the DMV, and let me tell you, Chuan Tian Xia Rockville absolutely delivers. This mom-and-pop spot has quickly become one of my go-tos when I’m craving bold, numbing spice and seriously generous portions. My friend Minje and I recently checked it out, and I’m SO excited to share everything we tried!

Chuan Tian Xia specializes in Sichuan cuisine, which means you’re getting those signature flavor profiles: numbing Sichuan peppercorns, fiery chili oil, and dishes that pack some serious heat. But don’t worry if you’re not a spice person, they have plenty of options that cater to all spice levels!

What Chuan Tian Xia Rockville Is Known For

Chuan Tian Xia is all about bringing real Sichuan flavors to the Rockville area. Their specialty is traditional dishes from China’s Sichuan province, which is famous for its bold, complex flavors and liberal use of chili peppers and Sichuan peppercorns. The restaurant has that cozy, family-run vibe that I absolutely love supporting, and the team was SO welcoming when we visited. They even gave us a behind-the-scenes look at how some of the dishes come together, which was really cool!

What really stands out to me is the generous portion sizes and the quality of ingredients. This isn’t your typical takeout Chinese food. Plus, the prices are super reasonable for the amount of food you get, making it perfect for sharing family-style with a group.

What to Order at Chuan Tian Xia Rockville

Okay, let’s talk about the food because WOW, we ordered a feast and I have thoughts on everything!

Warzhan Grilled Fish ($45.99)

This was absolutely the showstopper of our meal. The Warzhan Grilled Fish comes out in this massive pan filled with tender fish swimming in a sea of chili oil, Sichuan peppercorns, and aromatics. The fish itself is incredibly flaky and perfectly cooked, and the broth underneath is SO good. This dish is definitely meant for sharing, and it’s worth every penny. If you’re coming with a group, you NEED to order this.

Long Horn Pepper Shredded Beef ($23.99)

This was hands down one of my top three favorites from our meal. The beef is tender and perfectly shredded, tossed with long horn peppers and a savory-spicy sauce that’s just irresistible. The peppers add this great smoky flavor and a medium level of heat that’s not too overwhelming. The dish has amazing texture contrast, and the beef stays juicy and flavorful. I could eat this with a bowl of white rice all day long, honestly.

Chongqing Spicy Chicken with Peanuts ($22.99)

Another standout! This is Chuan Tian Xia’s take on the classic Chongqing-style chicken, and it’s SO good. The chicken pieces are fried until crispy and then tossed with dried chilies, Sichuan peppercorns, and crunchy peanuts. Fair warning: this dish looks like it’s mostly chilies, and you have to hunt for the chicken pieces, but that’s normal, lol! The chicken is as crispy as can be, and the peanuts add a great textural element.

Mapo Tofu ($13.99)

You can’t visit a Sichuan restaurant without ordering mapo tofu, and Chuan Tian Xia’s version does not disappoint. The silky tofu is cooked in a rich, spicy sauce with ground pork, fermented black beans, and plenty of chili oil. It’s comfort food at its finest, with that signature ma la (numbing and spicy) flavor profile. The sauce is bold and complex, and it pairs perfectly with a bowl of steamed rice to balance out the heat. At under $15, this is such a steal for the portion size you get.

Hot Chili Oil Noodles with Peanuts ($12.99)

These noodles are simple but SO satisfying. They come tossed in a fragrant chili oil with crushed peanuts, scallions, and garlic. The noodles have a great chewy texture, and the sauce is packed with flavor without being too heavy. This is a great dish to order if you want something a little less intense than the other spicy options, but still want that Sichuan flavor. Plus, at $12.99, it’s a total bargain.

Durian Charpati ($9.99)

Okay, this one is for the adventurous eaters! If you’re a durian fan (or durian-curious), you have to try this dessert. It’s a sweet, crispy pastry filled with durian cream. The flavor is definitely polarizing, but if you love durian like I do, it’s a fun way to end the meal.

Lunch Specials (Available Monday-Friday, $11.99)

I also want to give a shoutout to their lunch specials, which are available weekdays for just $11.99. We tried the eggplant, and it was especially tasty – tender, flavorful, and coated in a savory garlic sauce that I couldn’t get enough of. The lunch special portions are generous too, so it’s an amazing deal if you’re in the Rockville area during the week.

The Vibe at Chuan Tian Xia Rockville

The restaurant has a casual, welcoming atmosphere that’s perfect for families and groups. The space is actually pretty spacious with lots of seating, so it’s great for larger gatherings or even events. The team was super friendly and accommodating, and they were happy to answer our questions about the menu and make recommendations based on our spice tolerance.

It’s definitely a come-as-you-are kind of place – no pretense, just good food and friendly hospitality. Whether you’re coming for a casual weeknight dinner or bringing a big group to share a bunch of dishes family-style, Chuan Tian Xia fits the bill.

Absolutely, YES! I’m already planning my next visit because there are still so many dishes on the menu I want to try. If you’re a fan of authentic Sichuan food or just looking to expand your palate, Chuan Tian Xia Rockville is a must-visit.
