Bao Bei Rockville: What to Order & Can’t-Miss Bites
So excited that Bao Bei finally has a brick-and-mortar! I haven’t made it in yet (Daisy duties <3), but it’s one of the first places I’m hitting after she recovers. They’re known for Taiwanese comfort food done right, especially that slow-braised pork belly in pillowy house-made buns. I’m almost drooling just thinking about it… If DMV Asian comfort food is your love language, my guide to the best Korean fried chicken in the DMV is another one to bookmark.
About Kevin…
Bao Bei’s led by chef‑owner Kevin Hsieh, a Maryland native who turned a beloved pop‑up/ghost kitchen into a full‑service spot at Montrose Crossing. The brand has earned love from local and national press, praising its airy buns and deeply savory braises + a loyal following. Translation: you’re in good hands, and the bao is worth a detour
If you want more Rockville options to pair with your Bao Bei visit, Thai Chef Rockville is also in the area and serves Bangkok street food, including a catfish dry curry and tom yum fried rice that are hard to find anywhere else in MoCo.
What To Order at Bao Bai
- Bao Bei Bao – Melt-in-your-mouth pork belly with pickled greens and a touch of peanut sugar in a fluffy, handmade bun. A serious must for first-timers.
- Bao Bei Bowl – Minced pork belly over hot rice with pickled greens and a braised egg – pure comfort in a bowl + generous portions.
- Baozi – Huge, fluffy steamed bun stuffed with a pork-and-shrimp mix; there’s a veggie version, too. Both are solid so get whatever you’re in the mood for.
- Swirly Buns – Lightly sweet steamed buns with brown sugar swirls – dip in condensed milk for max yum.
