Real talk, Ananda might be my favorite Indian spot in the whole Maryland suburbs, or at least ONE of my top favorites, lol. Tucked into Maple Lawn in Fulton, this is refined Indian cuisine done the way that actually blows you away: the service is on point, the interior’s stunning, and every single meal I’ve had here has been spectacular.
It’s the kind of place I save for special occasions, but I’d honestly come back for a random Tuesday if my wallet let me. The herb-roasted lamb shank alone is some of the best lamb I’ve ever had, so tender the meat just falls off the bone. If you’ve been sleeping on Ananda, or you’ve only ever done your neighborhood curry house, let me walk you through why this one’s worth the drive and the splurge.

What Makes Ananda So Special?
So what sets Ananda apart? A big part of it’s the farm. They run Ananda Farm just up the road and pull a lot of their produce straight from it, right down to the fresh eggs they’ll sell you at the restaurant (chicken eggs and duck eggs, if you’re into that).
That farm-to-table thing isn’t a gimmick here, you can taste it in how fresh and bright everything is. The cooking leans refined and a little modern, built on traditional Punjabi methods, so it’s a real step up from your standard buffet-style Indian. There’s no big sign out front either, which I kind of love, it makes the whole thing feel like a neighborhood secret even though it’s anything but.
What to Order at Ananda
Okay, here’s what I got and what I’d tell you to order. Fair warning: I always get too full on savory to make it to dessert, so learn from my mistakes and pace yourself.
Roasted Zucchini and Leek Cakes
Start here. These are made with their own oven-roasted zucchini, herbed goat yogurt, and a spiced tamarind and date chutney, and they’re absolutely sublime, one of the best starters I’ve had in ages. It’s the kind of app that tastes like someone actually thought about it. Quick heads up that the menu rotates seasonally, so if you don’t spot it when you go, ask, because it’s a stunner.
Meat Samosa
If the cakes aren’t on, the meat samosa is your other opener. This thing was a LOT bigger than I expected and it’s stuffed to the brim with goodness. You really can’t go wrong starting with either one, so if you’re rolling with a group, just get both!

Herb-Roasted Lamb Shank
This is the one. The lamb’s herb-roasted and served with Chana masala and a cauliflower and corn khichdi, and it’s some of the best lamb I’ve ever had. Soooo tender, the meat literally fell off the bone, and both my boyfriend and I were shooketh by it, lol. If you order a single main here, make it this.
Chicken Curry
We got a chicken curry to share alongside the lamb and it was so creamy and yum. The two together were a total winner, and we mopped it all up with freshly baked garlic naan and rice (get the garlic naan, trust me!). Rich, comforting, exactly what you want next to that lamb.
A few other things on the menu worth knowing about, even though I didn’t get to them this time:
- Tandoor plates like lamb chops, beef short rib, and salmon tikka
- Chicken and lamb biryanis
- A big vegetarian lineup: palak paneer, dal makhani, malai kofta, aloo gobi
- Seafood mains like Chilean sea bass and crab Malabar
- A whole naan situation beyond garlic, think keema, Kashmiri, and rosemary sea salt
The Patio Feels Like a Secret Garden
If the weather’s even a little bit nice, request the patio. I’m not exaggerating when I say every time I sit out there I feel like I’ve wandered into the Secret Garden, hehe. It’s genuinely one of my favorite places to sit in the whole area. The terrace’s got these roll-up garage doors, ceiling fans and AC to keep it comfy in summer, and fireplaces for when it gets cold, so it kind of works year-round. One thing to know: patio seating’s first-come, first-served, so if you’ve got your heart set on it, aim to get there right when they open at 4.
Is Ananda REALLY Farm to Table?
Ananda runs its own farm nearby and sources a big chunk of its produce from it, plus free-range, pasture-raised chicken and duck eggs that they’ll actually sell you by the half-dozen or dozen at the restaurant. That connection to the farm is a real part of why the food tastes as fresh as it does, and it’s pretty rare to see an Indian restaurant around here doing it at this level. So if you care about where your food comes from, this is about as close to the source as you’ll get.
The Vibe and Experience
Ananda’s a special-occasion spot through and through. The interior’s stunning, all warm lighting, stained glass, and fireplaces, and the service has been on point every single time I’ve come in. It’s dressed-up without being stuffy, so it works for date night, an anniversary, or treating your parents when they’re in town. It’s not a quick casual weeknight thing, both because of the price and the pace, this is a sit-down, take-your-time kind of dinner. Reservations are your friend here, so I’d book ahead rather than risk walking in.
If you’re building a full Howard County special day around it, The Spa at Turf Valley in Ellicott City is the perfect afternoon anchor, a resort day spa with multi-treatment packages, champagne, and pool access that sets the tone for a night like this.

Is Ananda Worth The Splurge?
One hundred percent YES. Ananda’s easily one of my favorite spots in the MD burbs, and I’ve genuinely never had a bad meal here. It’s not an everyday, budget kind of place, it’s a splurge, but for a special occasion or when you just want dinner to feel like an event, it absolutely delivers. If you’re chasing more Indian food around Howard County, my other go-to is Clove & Cardamom over in Columbia, but for the full experience with the farm, the patio, and that lamb, Ananda’s in a league of its own for me.
So yeah, Ananda has my whole heart, and it’s the spot I send anyone looking to impress someone or just treat themselves to a really good meal in Howard County. And if you’re like me and always too full for dessert by the end, Decadent‘s right down the road in Maple Lawn for gelato on the way out. Have you guys been to Ananda yet? And if you’ve actually made it to dessert there, tell me what I’ve been missing in the comments, Nomsters. Save this one for your next special occasion!
