5th & Steaks: Where to Get Cheesesteaks Near UMD

August 28, 2026

Quick heads-up, Nomsters: this post’s in partnership with 5th & Steaks, a client of my agency NOM Digital. I’m genuinely excited to see them grow, and all opinions here are still 100% my own.

Okay, EXCITING news for the College Park crew! 5th & Steaks, the viral Philly cheesesteak truck I fell hard for over at their Glen Burnie spot, is rolling into College Park with their third Maryland truck. It parks at 9035 Baltimore Avenue, basically a cheesesteak’s throw from the University of Maryland, and if you’ve been following along, you already know how much I love what these guys do.

These are legit, South-Philly-style cheesesteaks: 100% ribeye, real-deal Aversa’s seeded rolls, and serious cheese pull. To kick things off, they gave away a free cheesesteak to the first 100 people in line on opening day, which tells you everything about the energy they bring. Let me break down what to get and why this truck’s worth the drive down Route 1.

What Makes 5th & Steaks a Standout Cheesesteak Truck in College Park

5th & Steaks was started by a family born and raised in South Philadelphia, and the name comes from 5th and South Street, where their family ran restaurants back in the day. That Philly pedigree shows up in the details that actually matter: every sandwich is built on 100% ribeye, the bread’s a proper Aversa’s seeded roll (chewy and sturdy, so it holds up instead of turning to mush), and the cheese game runs from Cooper Sharp to classic Cheez Whiz.

They blew up online for a reason, and now that reputation’s parked right by UMD. For students and anyone cruising Baltimore Avenue, this is about to be the go-to when you NEED a serious cheesesteak. It’s the same menu I raved about at their Glen Burnie truck, just closer to campus.

What to Order at 5th & Steaks

Here’s everything I got when I hit their Glen Burnie truck, plus a few builds worth knowing about. Prices are the same across their trucks.

The 5th ($17)

This is the one I reach for every single time. It’s ribeye with Cooper Sharp and fried onions (optional, but get them) on that Aversa’s seeded roll. The ribeye’s the star, and the Cooper Sharp brings a sharper, nuttier bite than your usual American cheese. If it’s your first visit, start here. You can’t go wrong.

The 9th ($17)

Same beautiful ribeye, same Aversa’s roll, just swapped into the gooier Cheez Whiz lane. If you’re a Whiz loyalist who wants that warm, runny, classic Philly experience, this is your build. Both The 5th and The 9th are the safe-bet crowd-pleasers.

The Pepper Jawn ($18)

This is their spicy build, ribeye with a house-made cherry pepper whiz. It’s got real heat, so if you’re spice-averse, consider yourself warned and grab The 5th instead. If you love a little kick, it’s a fun one.

A few more builds and sides on the menu worth a look:

  • The Trenton ($19): ribeye, chopped Taylor pork roll, and Cooper Sharp, a Jersey-Philly mashup
  • The Skoo-kil ($20): ribeye, cream cheese, bacon, and Cooper Sharp for the go-big crowd
  • The Bmore ($18): ribeye with lettuce, tomato, fried onions, and cherry peppers
  • The Chicken Cheesesteak ($17): fresh chopped chicken breast with your choice of cheese
  • French fries ($5) or cheese fries ($7) to round it out

What Makes a Philly Cheesesteak Different?

A true Philly cheesesteak uses thin-sliced ribeye (not chopped mystery meat), griddled and piled onto a long Italian roll, then hit with either Cooper Sharp, provolone, or Cheez Whiz. The roll matters just as much as the meat, and 5th & Steaks using Aversa’s seeded rolls is a dead giveaway they’re doing it right. Fried onions are the classic add, and “wiz wit” (Whiz with onions) is the traditional order. If you want to see how they stack up against the rest of the state, I’ve got a whole roundup of the best cheesesteaks in Maryland.

The Vibe and Experience

This is a walk-up food truck, so keep your expectations casual: you order, you wait, you get a genuinely great cheesesteak, no frills. Parked on Baltimore Avenue right by UMD, it’s built for a quick campus lunch, a post-class refuel, or a grab-and-go dinner before they close.

One heads-up that carries over from their Glen Burnie truck: when they sell out, they sell out, so don’t roll up at 7:55 expecting a full menu. College Park’s got a solid food-truck scene already (the best chicken and rice platter around comes off a truck near here too), and 5th & Steaks fits right in.

Is 5th & Steaks Worth the Line?

YES. I already knew I loved this brand from their Glen Burnie truck, so having a College Park location by UMD honestly feels like a gift to the whole neighborhood. It’s casual, it’s affordable, and it’s a legit Philly-style cheesesteak, which is not easy to find around here. If you’re a student, a Route 1 regular, or just a cheesesteak person, this one’s an easy yes.
